Carter fucked someone else the night before our wedding.

When he walked in, I was sorting through wedding stuff on the floor.

I looked up.

His shirt hung open. A hickey bloomed on his neck-pink and fresh.

Clatter.

The hairpin dropped from my hand.

“What the hell is that?”

His hand flew to his neck. For half a second, he looked guilty. Then his face went blank.

He threw a folder at me.

“Jade’s back. I’m done with you. That’s 10% of Hayes Corp.”

My mind went blank. “What?”

“The wedding’s off.”

I lunged at him, nails digging into his arm.

“Are you out of your fucking mind? We’re getting married tomorrow!”

He jerked away. “Look, Jade didn’t choose to leave, okay? Her family forced her out. Now she’s back, and I’m not screwing this up again.”

“What about me?!” My voice broke. “You’re just-you’re throwing me away for her?”

I threw myself at him, grabbing his shirt, shaking him.

“Seven years, Carter! Seven years! And you think you can just walk away? We’re supposed to get married tomorrow!”

He tried to push me off. I held on tighter, screaming.

“Look at me! You said no one got you like I did! You promised me a future!”

My voice cracked. “You said we’d grow old together!”

“Now she shows up and what? Those seven years mean nothing?”

“Where the hell was she when you were broke? When you had nothing?”

I loosened one hand but kept the other locked on his sleeve.

“Please, Carter, please…” My voice dropped to a whisper. “Forget the wedding. I don’t care anymore. Just don’t leave

me.”

He peeled my fingers off one by one.

“Mia, just stop, alright? Jade’s the one I’ve always wanted. She’s back now, and I’m not letting her go.”

“Always wanted?”

I laughed wildly.

“So what was I, huh? Just some stand-in?”

“I was there when you had nothing! I got my dad to invest when everyone else said no!”

“I turned down everything to stay with you! And now what? One text from her and it’s all gone?”
