All afternoon I’m zoning out.

Can’t focus on Preston. Can’t focus on the menu. Can’t focus on anything.

I mumble something about cramps and leave.

On the walk home, I stare at my phone.

Blake’s profile. Summer’s profile.

Side by side in my contacts.

They match now. Same aesthetic. Same vibe.

My hand feels like it weighs a hundred pounds.

I hover over the block button for like five minutes.

Then I do it.

Both of them. Gone.

Next day, pounding on the front door wakes me up.

I stumble downstairs in my pajamas.

They’re standing on the porch.

Clothes wrinkled. Eyes bloodshot. Suitcases at their feet.

Blake’s face is pure rage.

“You blocked us? Seriously? Summer freaked out—thought you were gonna hurt yourself or some shit. We drove twelve hours straight.”

His voice gets louder.

“You’re twenty-two, Willow. Stop acting like a damn teenager.”

I just stare at him.

Four years together. He never yelled at me. Not once.

Used to tell people he was “chill by nature.”

Now I get it.

He saves all his passion for her.

Summer pushes past him. Grabs both my hands. Eyes all wide and worried.

“Babe, listen—you’ve got this totally wrong. Blake and I? We’re just friends. I swear.”

I look down.

Jade bracelet on her wrist.

The one Blake dragged me to three different jewelry stores to find last month.

I thought he was finally trying.

He was.

Just not for me.

My eyes drift to her collarbone.

The hickeys are still there. Faint but visible under her tank top.

I let out a sharp laugh.

“So this is you testing him for me? Guess that included a full body inspection?”

Summer drops my hands like they burned her.

Blake steps in front of her. Arm around her waist.

“What the hell is wrong with you? When did you turn into such a bitch?”

Something inside me explodes.

“What do you WANT from me?!”

I’m screaming now. My voice cracks.

“You want me to smile and wave while you screw my best friend?!”

“You did it—so SAY IT! Stop making me feel crazy!”

Blake moves closer. Gets right in my face.

“Fine. You want honesty?”

“Summer and I have been hooking up for two years.”

Summer lunges forward, clamps her hand over his mouth.

“Blake, stop—”

“She’s gonna lose it—”

He peels her hand off. Threads his fingers through hers. Doesn’t break eye contact with me.

“You’re boring, Willow. Basic. Clingy. Paranoid.”

“If you hadn’t latched onto me like a barnacle, if Summer hadn’t felt sorry for you, I would’ve ended this freshman year.”

My vision blurs.

Hands shaking.

I remember our first day.

Campus pond. I slipped trying to grab a drowning kitten.

He jumped in after me—jeans, sneakers, everything.

Pulled me out laughing.

“Who even does that? You’re ridiculous.”

I thought it was cute.

Now I’m shrieking.

“GET OUT! Both of you—get the hell OUT OF MY HOUSE!”

Blake doesn’t even blink.

Crosses his arms. Smirks.

“Your house?”

Long pause.

“This is Summer’s house now. You’re the guest here.”

Everything stops.

I turn to Summer.

My voice comes out quiet. Broken.

“…What’s he talking about?”

Summer won’t look at me.

Steps between us. Voice all soft and soothing.

“Willow… babe… maybe you should just go rest in the guest wing for a little bit? Just till you calm down?”

Blake pulls her against his chest. Shakes his head like she’s too pure for this world.

“You’re too good to her.”

“She’s the housekeeper’s kid. Why are you begging her like she owns the place?”

My brain catches up.

Suddenly it all makes sense.

I start laughing.

Can’t stop.

It sounds hysterical even to me.

“MARIA!”
