Ethan came back to visit months later. He wasn’t the same sweet, dim-witted creature I remembered – he seemed sharpened somehow, polished into someone almost new.

“Ms. Vance.” He greeted me with a crisp nod that felt almost painfully professional. “It’s been a while.”

Liam was already blocking the doorway. “Whatever you need to say, you can say it from right there. She can hear you perfectly well.”

I bit back a laugh and pinched his arm. “You can’t be rude to guests.”

Liam looked wounded, but reluctantly stepped aside to let him in.

Ethan was here on the company’s behalf to conduct a customer satisfaction survey. After leaving

my place, he’d never been reassigned to another owner. Instead, he’d joined the company’s client

relations team.

“Ms. Vance, are you satisfied with how Liam has performed over the past year?” Ethan asked.

Beside me, Liam sat ramrod straight, visibly bracing himself.

“Very satisfied.” I smiled.

“Have you ever considered returning him?” Ethan continued. Liam’s eyes snapped back to my face.

I shook my head. “Never.”

“Any areas you’d like to see improved?” Ethan asked. With two positive answers down, Liam had

started to relax.

He leaned back, arms crossed, one eyebrow raised at Ethan, a look that all but screamed, See? She’s

obsessed with me.

“Well,” I said, propping my chin on my hand and deliberately drawing it out. “That’s a long story.”

“When I first got Liam, he was cold and distant.” I let that sit for a second. “He didn’t want to be

“I’ve wanted you from the very beginning.” His voice turned soft, almost fragile.

I tilted my head. “Then why did you act like that?”

“I learned it from humans.” Liam muttered sheepishly, pulling out his phone to open his bookmarks.
