Born Ditzy: Drunk Vows, Sober Goodbye Chapter 06

Nolan’s lashes fluttered as his eyes opened a crack. His lips quivered, like he wanted to say something. But in the end, his eyelids slid shut again.

The comments were frantic.

[Did he hear Lyra?]

[I think so? She was so loud.]

[Judging from the look on his face before he passed out, he heard her.]

[The doctor’s here, the doctor’s here!]

The ER staff rushed over and lifted Nolan onto a gurney. I followed them, still clutching my medical file.

Celia tried to follow, too, but a nurse stopped her. “Are you family?”

“I’m his-”

“Ex-wife,” I said without even turning back. “I’m his ex-wife, and I’m pregnant with his baby.”

The nurse froze. She didn’t stop Celia anymore, but she also didn’t let her run after us. As we hurried off to an operating room, I looked down at Nolan’s unconscious face, suddenly wanting to cry.

It wasn’t out of sadness. It was because I felt wronged. I’d tried to tell him so many times, and every single time, it fell through.

The comments floated past.

[Lyra’s about to cry. It’s my first time seeing her like this.]

[I feel so bad for her. She didn’t do anything wrong.]

[But I feel bad for Mr. Steele, too. He thought the baby was gone.]

I took a deep breath and forced the tears back. I rested a hand on my abdomen and whispered, “Sweetheart, your dad is too impulsive. You’re not allowed to take after him, okay?”

Then, I pulled out the ultrasound report and tucked it into Nolan’s hand. That way, it would be the first thing he saw when he woke up.

By the time Nolan woke up, it was already evening. I was sitting by his bed, holding a thermal flash and sipping ginger tea in tiny sips.

I needed to take iron supplements for my anemia, but the hospital’s liquid iron tasted disgusting. I secretly mixed the ginger tea › with it.

The comments were baffled.

[Lyra, what’s that cursed concoction you’re drinking?]

[This is a medical miracle. How is that not causing some kind of chemical reaction?]

[Forget chemistry. Mr. Steele’s awake!]

Nolan’s fingers twitched. I set the flask down and leaned in. His lashes fluttered several times before his eyes finally opened. For

a moment, they were unfocused. Then, they sharpened and locked onto me.

“Lyra…” he croaked, his voice so hoarse it was barely audible.

“Yeah,” I answered softly.

He tried to push himself up, and fresh blood seeped through the bandage on his left arm.

I pressed a hand to his shoulder. “Don’t move. Your wound’s not healed yet.”

He didn’t listen. His gaze darted around before finally dropping to his right hand, which gripped a sheet of paper the ultrasound report. It was already crumpled in his fist, but the text and image were still clearly visible.

“Eight weeks pregnant. Single live fetus. Cardiac activity present.”

Nolan stared at that line without moving.

I watched him and said slowly, “I didn’t get an abortion. I just came in for a prenatal checkup. I’m a little anemic, so I looked pale. I told you right before you passed out, so you probably didn’t hear me. Do you hear me now?”

He didn’t speak. He lifted the ultrasound right up to his face and studied it for a long time. Then, he lowered it and looked at me again. His eyes started to turn red.

The comments started up again.

[Nolan’s gonna cry again.]

[This time, it’s tears of joy, right?]

[That look on his face, like he’s crying and smiling at the same time… It really gets me.]

Nolan’s Adam’s apple bobbed over and over, his lips trembling again and again. But in the end, no sound came out. He just reached out a hand and gently touched my abdomen, his fingers still shaking.

is voice was completely wrecked.

we divorced?”

cah. I’d just found out. I didn’t have time to tell you.”

Nolan closed his eyes. Tears slid down from the corners of his eyes.

I froze. We’d been married for three years, and this was the first time I’d ever seen him cry.
