Booked to Disappear Chapter 07

Booked to Disappear Chapter 07

That evening, after my parents get home from work, the three of us are having dinner when

someone knocks on the front door.

When we open it, Gavin’s parents are standing outside, their faces filled with panic.

“The phone won’t connect to Gavin anymore. Do you know where he is?”

The moment they step inside, they rush over and demand answers.

“Isn’t he on his way to Europe?” I reply calmly. “There’s no signal on airplanes. Isn’t that normal?”

Seeing how unfazed I am only makes them more anxious.

“I already checked his flight. They were supposed to connect through Mexico. They should’ve landed hours ago, but I still can’t reach him.”

I slowly set down my fork.

A few possibilities flash through my mind, but I keep them to myself.

“I don’t know either. If you’re really worried, you should report him missing.”

After all, joining that bargain-basement tour is Gavin’s own decision.

It has nothing to do with me.

Mrs. Bennett immediately points a finger at me.

“You knew he signed up for that cheap tour, yet you didn’t even try to stop him. If something happens to my son, how can you live with yourself?”

The Bennetts don’t hesitate to guilt-trip me.

The expressions on my parents’ faces darken instantly.

“When the freshmen in our major were planning this trip,” I say coldly, “I offered them my family’s tour out of goodwill. Your son accused me of making dirty money and chose the cheaper

one instead. If anything happens to him, that’s the consequence of his own choices. It has nothing

to do with me.”

Mr. Bennett’s face turns red with anger, “How dare you curse my son!”

“That’s enough!”

My father stands up and steps in front of me.

“Your son chose the cheapest tour because he wanted to save money. That has nothing to do with

my daughter. As his parents, you’re the ones responsible for him. Instead of reflecting on your own

mistakes, you’re blaming my daughter. Aren’t you ashamed?”

Mrs. Bennett looks at me with disappointment.

“Hannah, you knew all along they were going overseas, and you kept it from us. You did that on

purpose.”

Even though she’d always treated me kindly, she’s still choosing to blame me without caring about

the facts.

The last bit of warmth I feel toward her disappears.

“Gavin secretly used my passport information to apply for a visa without my permission. You’re lucky I didn’t call the police over that. And you still think you have the right to blame me?”

“If you’re really worried about him, stop wasting time arguing with me and call the police. The longer you wait, the harder it’ll be to find him if he’s already been trafficked.”

I only say it to scare them.

I never imagine those words will come true.

That very night, several parents who can’t reach their children go to the police together.

Many of the students have hidden the trip from their families, so their parents can provide very

little useful information.

The police contact the airport and confirm the flight the students are supposed to take to France.

Then they discover something horrifying.

Out of the thirty-nine freshmen from our major who signed up for the trip, not a single one ever boards that flight.

They all remain in Mexico.

When the parents hear the news, some collapse on the spot.

Others break down in tears, begging the police to find their children.

As the only student in our class who doesn’t go on the trip, I’m naturally brought to the police

station for questioning.
