Booked to Disappear Chapter 06

The moment Tiffany says that, the crowd falls unusually silent.

Sarah has handled the entire trip from start to finish. None of the other students have even seen the

itinerary, so they have no idea where they’re actually flying.

Everyone turns to look at Sarah.

“They booked nonstop flights,” she says calmly. “We’re just taking a connecting flight. We’re all ending up in France.”

She sounds completely confident, carefully leaving out one important detail.

Their layover is in Mexico.

“So that’s it.”

“I mean, our tour only costs $3,999. A layover is understandable.”

“Exactly. It’s only a few extra hours, and we’re saving three thousand dollars. Totally worth it.”

“I don’t know why some people are acting so superior. A nonstop flight doesn’t mean much when you’re still stuck in economy class. I’d rather save the money.”

With Sarah’s reassurance, everyone relaxes again.

“$3,999? That’s way too cheap,” Tiffany says. “You guys may be willing to risk it, but we’re not.”

She doesn’t bother arguing any further. Instead, she grabs my arm and starts pulling me away.

“Hannah, your passport is damaged anyway. There’s no point staying here. You’re obviously NOT going to Europe.”

Gavin calls after me.

I never planned to go in the first place.

Pretending not to hear him, I leave the airport with Tiffany.

Before long, all the freshmen from my major finish checking in and head through security.

As we walk away, Tiffany lowers her voice.

“I caught a glimpse of their tickets just now. They’re connecting through Mexico.”

She shakes her head, “They’ve got a lot more courage than I do.”

“Maybe that’s the only kind of ticket they could afford with such a cheap tour,” I reply.

Even after leaving the airport, I can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong.

Finally, I call our academic advisor, Ms. Lawson.

“What?” she exclaims. “They all went to Europe? Sarah told me they were just taking a two-day trip

to the next city over.”

As much as Gavin and Sarah infuriate me, I don’t have any grudge against my other classmates.

I don’t want anything bad to happen to them.

“All right,” Ms. Lawson says immediately. “I’ll contact their parents right away. Thank you for letting me know.”

Not long after we hang up, Gavin’s phone rings while he’s waiting at the boarding gate.

“Gavin!” his mother shouts the moment he answers. “Your advisor told me you’re going to Europe! Didn’t you say you were just hiking in the next city? Get back here right now!”

Her voice is so loud that even without speakerphone, everyone nearby can hear her.

“Mom, I only hid it from you because I knew you’d say no,” Gavin argues as he walks off to a corner. “I’m about to board. If I leave now, what will my classmates think of me?”

“You just turned eighteen. You’re flying to Europe with a bunch of other students. What if you get scammed? I’m only trying to protect you. Come home now. If you want to visit Europe, your father

and I will take you next month.”

Going with his parents isn’t the same as going with his friends.

Besides, he’d already promised Sarah they would take photos together beneath the Eiffel Tower.

There is no way he’s giving up this trip.

Thinking of that, he answers firmly, “Mom, I’m an adult now. I can make my own decisions. I’m going to Europe, and that’s final. Please stop trying to stop me.”

At that moment, the boarding announcement echoes through the terminal.

Passengers are now invited to board.

Once the plane takes off, no one will be able to stop them.

One after another, my classmates eagerly board the aircraft, convinced they’re on their way to the romantic European vacation they’ve been dreaming about.
