Blood And Promises Novel by Sabrina Hart Chapter 24

He struggled to blink, his unfocused gaze drifting toward the gray sky. Snowflakes fell one after another, landing on his eyelashes and quickly melting into icy droplets. Yet before his eyes, Samantha’s face appeared.

She wore a bright red dress, her smile radiant and unrestrained under the sunlight. She nestled in his arms, quietly complaining about how bad the cafeteria food tasted. She knelt on shattered glass, her face lifted, tears stubbornly swirling in her eyes. She looked at him one last time and said calmly, “Richard, we’re even now.”

No… They could not be even. He had not atoned yet. He had not… tried to win her back again. He had said he would wait for her to return.

A fierce, unwilling thought, like the last spark of a dying fire, struggled to ignite within his fading consciousness. With the last of his strength, he moved his fingers, trying to reach for that spot on his chest—where, in the inner pocket, he kept an old hairpin Samantha had once accidentally left behind.

Then, boundless darkness completely swallowed him.

Junction City, Army Band rehearsal hall.

Amidst the melodious music, Samantha was performing a series of gentle stretches, preparing for the upcoming rehearsal.

The political commissar of the troupe hurriedly pushed open the door, his expression grave. His gaze swept over the crowd and finally settled on Samantha, as if he wanted to speak but hesitated.

The music stopped, and everyone turned to look.

“Ms. Serrano,” the commissar stepped forward, his voice somewhat heavy, “could you… come out for a moment? There’s something I need to tell you.”

Samantha’s heart inexplicably sank, an ominous premonition quietly gripping her chest. She lowered her arms and followed the commissar into the corridor.

The corridor was very quiet, with only the two of them.

The commissar looked at her, sighed, and lowered his voice, saying, “We just received an urgent notice from Fort Hamilton… Major General Cantrell, while carrying out a rescue mission at the border, was shot three times while covering his comrades. He is seriously wounded… the situation is very dangerous, and he is undergoing emergency treatment.”

“Clang-!”

The insulated cup Samantha had been holding to wipe her sweat slipped from her hand, crashing onto the polished terrazzo floor with a piercing shatter. Scalding water and tea leaves splashed everywhere, soaking the hem of her pants. She did not notice at all. She simply stood there in a daze, the color draining from her face until she was as pale as the wall.

Shot three times… seriously wounded… very dangerous… Richard… was he going to die?

This realization struck her mind like a sudden bolt of lightning, leaving her completely blank. A sharp, almost suffocating pain radiated from her heart.

“Where is he now?”

“He has already been brought back by special plane. He’s at Irwin Army Community Hospital, in the intensive care unit.” The commissar looked at her instantly pale face, a trace of pity flashing in his eyes. “Do you… want to go see him?”

Samantha did not answer. She stood where she was, her hand hanging at her side trembling uncontrollably.

Outside the intensive care unit at Irwin Army Community Hospital. Through the huge glass window, Richard could be seen lying inside. His body was covered with various tubes connected to complex machines. An oxygen mask covered his face, thick gauze was wrapped around his chest, and faint traces of blood still seeped through. His eyes were closed, his face deathly pale from blood loss, his brows tightly furrowed, as if he were enduring immense pain even in his coma.

The doctors said the surgery had been extremely risky, and his life was temporarily saved, but due to excessive blood loss and severe injuries, he had fallen into a deep coma. Whether he could wake up, or when he might wake up, was completely unknown. They even hinted that the patient himself… did not seem to have a strong will to survive.
