Blood And Promises Novel by Sabrina Hart Chapter 02

Outside the door, Samantha felt the blood in her body freeze.

She braced herself against the cold wall to keep from collapsing.

So the blood she’d endured pain to donate every month wasn’t going to wounded soldiers. It wasn’t some requirement for military spouses. It was being transfused into Rebecca Macias, the woman Richard actually loved.

And Emerson, her biological father, had made a deal with Richard. He traded her marriage in exchange for turning her into Rebecca’s personal blood bank.

It had been five years.

She’d lived like a fool, lost in a happiness she thought was real. Every month, she rolled up her sleeve and handed over her blood to sustain the woman he loved.

The pain tore through her chest, far worse than any needle ever had.

She didn’t remember how she left the hospital. She only remembered that the sunlight was blinding, yet she felt frozen to the bone.

Now Samantha stood on the corner outside the nightclub. The wind tangled her hair. She took a deep breath and forced the sting in her eyes back down.

“It’s over. Don’t look back,” she thought.

She stepped forward, only to run into the last person she wanted to see—Meredith.

Meredith wore a tailored jacket and carried a shopping bag, clearly just out of a department store.

She paused, then sized Samantha up.

“Well, if it isn’t Sammy. Shouldn’t you be home taking care of your husband? A married woman ought to settle down. Don’t end up like your mother. She thought she was special, but couldn’t hold onto her man and jumped off a building. That’s not exactly dignified, is it?”

Normally, Samantha would’ve sneered, thrown a sarcastic reply, and walked away.

But today, Meredith’s words lit the fuse on everything she’d been holding inside.

“Meredith,” Samantha said softly as she turned around. Her voice was icy. “What did you just say?”

Meredith flinched at the look in her eyes but puffed up her chest. “I said don’t turn out like your mot—”

A loud slap rang out, abruptly shutting Meredith up.

Samantha used all her strength. Meredith’s head snapped to the side. A clear handprint appeared instantly, and there was blood at the corner of Meredith’s mouth.

“How dare you hit me!” Meredith shrieked.

“So what?” Samantha stepped closer, eyes cold. “A mistress who climbed her way in thinks she can talk about my mother? If you can’t speak properly, I’ll teach you!”

She grabbed Meredith and dragged her toward the decorative pond near the club.

“Let go! Samantha, you’re insane! Help! She’s trying to kill me!”

Samantha ignored Meredith. She shoved Meredith’s head into the freezing water.

Meredith choked and struggled wildly.

Samantha yanked her up. “You done talking or not?”

“Y-You’re crazy… Help…”

“Looks like you still haven’t learned,” Samantha said, her gaze turning cold as she shoved Meredith’s head back under the water.

Once. Twice. Thrice…

A crowd had already gathered, but no one dared step in to stop the beautiful girl radiating raw hostility.

“Stop! Samantha! Stop right now!”

A shout cut through the noise.

Emerson pushed through the crowd with several guards, breathing hard.

When he saw Meredith barely conscious, he began to shake with rage. “You ungrateful brat! What kind of madness is this? Let Meredith go!”

Samantha released her. Meredith collapsed to the ground like a heap of wet rags, coughing violently.

“Merrie! Are you alright?” Emerson helped Meredith up, then glared at Samantha. “Look at yourself! What have you turned into? Take her back and tie her up! She’s getting punished!”

Samantha didn’t resist. She only looked at Emerson. The defiance that once filled her eyes was gone, replaced by cold disappointment and lifeless stillness.

They dragged her back to Emerson’s place.

In the living room, Emerson ordered someone to bring in a basin filled with shattered glass.

“Kneel!” He pointed at the jagged pile.

Samantha didn’t move.

“I said, kneel! Apologize to Meredith!”

“I did nothing wrong.” Her voice was calm. “She insulted my mother, so I hit her. That’s all. You want me to apologize? She doesn’t deserve it.”

“Y-You’ve completely lost your mind!” His face turned ashen with fury. “I’m teaching you a lesson today! Make her kneel!”

Two guards forced Samantha down onto the sharp glass.

Pain shot through her knees. Blood quickly soaked through her pants, spreading into dark stains across the floor.

Her face went pale, sweat beading across her forehead. She bit down hard on her lip and stayed silent, staring at Emerson and Meredith with unblinking eyes.

Meredith leaned weakly against him, covering her face as she sobbed. “Emmie, it’s alright… She’s still young… She doesn’t know any better…”

“Merrie, don’t defend her! Her mother spoiled her rotten! If I don’t discipline her today, she’ll think she can do anything!” Emerson patted Meredith gently, then turned back to Samantha and raised the cane.

“Stop!”

A cold, low voice came from the doorway.

Through her blurred vision, Samantha saw Richard stride in, his uniform crisp, shoulder insignia gleaming.

His expression was hard, brows drawn tight. When his gaze fell on her blood-soaked knees, his pupils seemed to tighten.

Was he worried she was hurt? Or worried that if his living blood supply died, the woman he loved would lose her donor?

The thought drove straight into Samantha’s chest, leaving a sharper pain in its wake.

Her vision went black, and she collapsed.
