Blood And Promises Novel by Sabrina Hart Chapter 14

The touch was of cool skin and the roughness of bandages.

Richard’s grip was shockingly strong, and Samantha staggered as he pulled her, the smile on her face freezing instantly and vanishing without a trace.

She turned her head and saw it was him. A fleeting flash of astonishment crossed her beautiful almond-shaped eyes, but it quickly iced over, leaving only utter indifference and coldness.

“Let go.” Her voice was flat and even, yet it pierced like an ice pick.

Almost at the same moment, the air force officer stepped forward, blocking Richard’s view of Samantha. The man was tall, nearly eye to eye with Richard, his expression stern and exuding the unique, sharp aura of a soldier. His voice was steady but left no room for argument: “Please let go. You’re hurting her.”

Only then did Richard, as if burned, abruptly loosen his grip, though his fingers still encircled Samantha’s slender wrist. His gaze was as sharp as a blade, directed at the man opposite him. His voice was squeezed out through clenched teeth: “Who are you?”

The man met his gaze without the slightest retreat. Instead, he gave a faint, almost imperceptible smile that did not reach his eyes, carrying a cold sense of pressure.

“Humberto Murphy,” he said clearly. He paused, his eyes glancing at the Major General insignia on Richard’s shoulder, then finished his introduction in a calm tone, “Sammy’s… fiancé.”

Fiancé.

Those three words struck Richard like three bolts of lightning, crashing down on his head. His pupils contracted sharply as he jerked his head to look at Samantha. The color drained from his face, his lips moved but no sound came out. For the first time, clear and almost fragile cracks appeared in his usually calm and sharp eyes, filled with disbelief.

Under such a gaze, Samantha gently tried to pull her wrist free. Richard instinctively let go of her hand. A glaring red mark was left around her wrist where he had gripped her. Samantha glanced down at it, her face expressionless, and simply rubbed it gently with her other hand.

Then she took a small step forward, standing beside Humberto, and naturally, almost familiarly, took his arm. She raised her eyes to look at Richard, her gaze calm and unruffled, as if she were looking at an irrelevant stranger. Her voice was clear and composed as she drew the final boundary: “Major General Cantrell, I believe the newspapers have made it very clear. We are already divorced and have no further legal ties.”

She tilted her head slightly, glancing at the upright Humberto beside her, her tone even carrying a faint, almost polite detachment: “This is my fiancé, Humberto.”

“So,” she paused, each word like an ice-forged nail hammered into Richard’s already battered heart, “please, from now on, do not disturb my life again.”

After speaking, she did not look again at Richard’s face, which had turned as pale as paper, nor at the storm and devastation in his eyes. She simply turned away with Humberto, decisive and efficient. The pale yellow hem of her dress traced a resolute arc.

The two of them left together, their figures gradually merging into the warm glow of the sunset at the end of the alley, harmonious and well-matched, as if they were always meant to be together.

Richard stood frozen in place, like a stone statue whose soul had been instantly drained away. He stared at the two figures fading into the distance, at Samantha’s unwavering refusal to look back even once. From the place where his heart was, there came an unprecedented, sharp, hollow pain. It was as if the most important part of him had been forcibly gouged out, leaving only a bloody, gaping hole through which the wind howled, chilling him to the bone and making his whole body tremble.

Fiancé? How could she dare? How many days had it been since their divorce? And she already had a fiancé? No, impossible. It had to be fake. She must have deliberately found an actor just to provoke him.

Humberto? He had never heard that name before. An Air Force Brigadier General? A Brigadier General in his early thirties? His background could not be simple. But how could Samantha know such a person? And… be so close to him?

Countless questions crashed wildly through Richard’s mind, making his head throb with pain. He steadied himself against the cold brick wall, barely able to stand, as the surging blood in his chest and an indescribable panic threatened to drown him.

He had to find her and get to the bottom of this.
