Blood And Promises Novel by Sabrina Hart Chapter 06

The door opened quickly, and Richard walked in with Rebecca.

He saw Samantha awake, staring at them with cold eyes. Rebecca shrank behind him, eyes red, like a frightened animal.

Richard stepped to the bed. “You’re awake. How do you feel? Does your arm still hurt?”

Samantha ignored him and kept looking at Rebecca.

Rebecca flinched and hid farther behind him. Richard patted her shoulder, then turned back. “Sammy, she didn’t mean it. She was scared too and feels terrible. This can be handled—”

“Richard,” Samantha cut in, her voice hoarse. “Do you know what acid does to someone? You’re always the one who talks about rules and discipline. You should know what she did is a felony.”

His brows tightened. “We can settle this privately. Becca’s health isn’t good. She wouldn’t hold up in prison…”

“Settle it privately?” Samantha gave a hollow laugh. “Fine.

“I’ve always believed in an eye for an eye,” Samantha said. “The terms are simple…”

She pointed at Rebecca. “You let me do the same. I throw acid on your hand! After that, we’re even.”

Rebecca’s face went pale. She clutched Richard’s arm tightly.

Samantha’s gaze turned icy. “What’s wrong? Are you afraid? You didn’t hesitate when you did it to me.”

“I-I didn’t mean to…” Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.

“You know whether you meant it or not.” Samantha took a bottle of acid from the cabinet and pulled the stopper. She looked at Rebecca. “Your choice. Either I do this, or you face charges and deal with the consequences.”

Rebecca trembled and looked at Richard for help.

His expression darkened. Seeing the resolve in Samantha’s eyes, he knew this wouldn’t end peacefully.

He took a deep breath, stepped forward, and stood in front of Rebecca.

“Richard, move,” Samantha said coldly.

Richard didn’t move. He only looked at Samantha, his expression conflicted. “Sammy, that’s enough.”

“I said move!”

Rebecca hid behind Richard. She stared at the bottle in Samantha’s hand, her eyes flickering. Then, as if she’d made up her mind, she said in a trembling voice, “Okay… Ms. Serrano, if this will calm you down…I…I’ll let you do it.”

She stepped out from behind Richard and slowly extended her left hand. She closed her eyes, as if she were ready to face death.

Samantha raised the bottle.

Just as she was about to pour, Richard suddenly turned, pulled Rebecca into his arms, and used his entire back to shield her.

The liquid splashed across him.

The whole bottle soaked his back. The fabric of his military uniform began to corrode instantly, giving off a faint sizzling sound.

Richard’s body stiffened, and his face turned pale. Fine beads of sweat formed on his forehead. He clenched his teeth and didn’t make a sound.

He slowly turned back to Samantha, who stood frozen in shock. His voice trembled with pain, but it was still clear. “I took it for her. Is it settled now?”

The empty bottle slipped from Samantha’s hand and shattered on the floor.

She looked at his pale face, at his burned back, and at the way he’d protected Rebecca without hesitation. Her heart felt crushed. Even breathing hurt.

How touching. He even threw himself in front of her.

For Rebecca, he was willing to throw his life away.

What had her five years been? It was nothing but a cruel joke.

“Okay.” Samantha heard her own dry voice. It sounded calm, almost lifeless. “It’s settled.”

It wasn’t just the grudge between her and Rebecca.

Her love for Richard over the past five years was over, too.

Rebecca finally reacted. She rushed to Richard’s side, crying hysterically. “Richie! How could you be so foolish! Are you okay? Does it hurt? Doctor! Call a doctor!”

Medical staff rushed in and helped Richard out of the room, with Rebecca following closely behind.

Samantha was left alone in the ward.

She lost all strength and sank onto the bed. She looked at her own arm wrapped in bandages, still throbbing with pain. At last, she buried her face in the blanket and cried silently.

Over the next few days, Samantha took care of herself.

Richard never came. Only Giovanni delivered meals on time every day.

On the day Samantha was discharged, she finished the paperwork and stepped out of the hospital. Rebecca stopped her at the entrance.

“Ms. Serrano, you’re leaving? Is your arm better?”

Rebecca stepped closer, her expression dark. “I kept thinking these past few days. Why do you hate me so much? Now I finally understand. You knew all along that Richie really loves me. He only married you so you could donate blood for me. Isn’t that right?”
