Blood And Promises Novel by Sabrina Hart Chapter 03

When Samantha woke again, she was in the bedroom she shared with Richard.

The moment he saw her eyes open, he leaned closer. “You’re awake. Does your knee still hurt? The doctor checked you. The wounds are deep. You need to rest and let them heal.”

In the past, seeing him sitting beside her, speaking in that gentle tone, would’ve melted her heart. She would’ve believed that after Lindsay died, she’d finally found someone who truly cared about her.

Now, knowing the truth, it only felt like knives twisting in her chest.

She forced down the surge of emotion and brushed his hand away. “I don’t need you.”

Richard’s hand froze mid-air.

He frowned slightly, then softened his voice. “What’s wrong now? You were fine a few days ago. Why’d you go looking for your stepmother and cause that scene? I told you before to just live your life. Don’t let other people affect your mood.”

“Don’t let other people affect my mood?” Samantha thought.

Was he actually concerned about her, or worried her emotions might interfere with her blood donations?

She let out a cold laugh, about to speak, when someone knocked lightly.

A young woman in a simple dress walked in holding a mug of soup.

“Richie, is Ms. Serrano awake? I made some chicken soup. It’s good for recovery after an injury.”

Samantha’s gaze landed on the young woman’s face, and her blood seemed to freeze.

The young woman was Rebecca.

Taking Samantha’s blood for Rebecca wasn’t enough for Sebastian. Now he’d actually brought Rebecca straight into the house.

Seeing Samantha staring at Rebecca, Richard spoke calmly. “Sammy, this is Rebecca Macias. We served together before. She’s a military doctor. Her rental fell through, so she’s staying here for a few days.”

Served together? Military doctor? Staying a few days?

Samantha dug her nails into her palm. Did he really think she was that naive?

“No.” Her voice was cold. “If she has housing problems, she can stay at a hotel. There’s no reason for her to stay here!”

In the past, the slightest frown from her would’ve made Richard take her side without hesitation.

But this time, he didn’t immediately give in. “Sammy, Becca’s health isn’t great. It’s not ideal for her to stay alone outside. It’s just a few days. She’ll move as soon as she finds a place. She won’t disturb us.”

“Won’t disturb us? She’s already standing in our bedroom!” Samantha thought.

Rebecca’s eyes reddened, her voice trembling. “Ms. Serrano, I’m sorry for imposing. I’ll leave right away. But before I go, please drink the soup. It’ll help you recover…”

She stepped closer and held out the mug.

Samantha felt sick at the sight of Rebecca’s fragile, pitiful expression.

She turned her head away. “I don’t want it. Take it away.”

“Ms. Serrano, please take a sip. I spent a long time making it…” Rebecca insisted, moving closer.

“I said no! Can’t you understand plain English?”

“Ah!” Rebecca cried out.

The mug slipped, and the scalding soup splashed across her own arm and chest.

“Becca!” Richard rushed forward. “Are you okay? Does it hurt?”

Tears filled Rebecca’s eyes, but she shook her head. “I’m fine… It doesn’t hurt… It’s not Ms. Serrano’s fault.”

Samantha watched the scene and suddenly laughed.

“Rebecca, I never touched that mug! You want to perform? Fine. Let me help you finish the act!”

She reached for the half mug still on the nightstand, intending to throw it at Rebecca for real.

But the moment her fingers touched the mug, her wrist was seized.

At some point, Richard turned and grabbed her wrist. His grip was hard. She heard a faint crack, then a surge of searing pain. Her wrist was broken.

She groaned, losing her grip. The remaining soup spilled over her own body.

The hot liquid soaked through her thin sleep shirt, burning her skin.

“Sammy!” Richard’s voice turned stern, edged with anger. “How long are you going to keep this up?”

“Keep this up?” she thought.

Samantha looked at her reddened wrist, her burned chest, then at Rebecca sheltered behind him. The whole situation felt absurd.

“I’m the one causing trouble?” Her voice was hoarse. “Richard, you believe her but not me?”

The moment she asked, she found it laughable.

Of course, he believed Rebecca.

Rebecca was the one he treasured. What was Samantha? She was just a useful blood donor.
