Betrayed On My Wedding Eve Chapter 21

He made it a game.

Every time we saw each other after that, he’d look at me for a moment. Then:

“Good mood today?”

Or: “Who upset you?”

I gave up trying not to find it funny.

“How do you always know?”

He laced his hands behind his head.

“I have a younger brother. You two have this thing in common. You both bury everything.”

I went quiet.

“Don’t your family worry about you being out here?”

He shook his head. Calm about it.

“We’re estranged.”

“Why?”

“They needed to control everything. Growing up, they pushed me into whatever they wanted. If I pushed back, there were consequences. I let them steer me into medicine, into a hospital career. But it was never enough. They wanted more. More titles, more prestige, something to brag about. I didn’t want that life. MSF is medicine in its purest form. Saving lives. That’s what I want.”

He exhaled.

“I feel guilty about my brother, honestly. When I wouldn’t fall in line, they had him. A second chance. So after I escaped, he got pushed into my old life. He’s obedient, but I know he’s miserable. I heard he had a girlfriend he really loved. They broke them up.”

First time he’d mentioned family. It was sadder than I expected.

We sat with that for a while.

Then: “What about you? What brought you all the way out here?”
