Betrayed After Getting Rich Overnight Chapter 06

Chapter 6 Selfish

After I gave her the go-ahead, the intern rushed off to prepare the contract.

I was about to swipe my card when that eye-rolling property consultant from earlier came storming over with Autumn, Michael, and Felicia in tow. It turned out she was friends with Autumn.

Felicia raised her hand and tried to slap me across the face. “You ungrateful brat! Where’d you get the money to buy a house!”

I dodged easily with a quick sidestep. “We cut ties three days ago, remember? Where I get my money is none of your business anymore.”

Felicia was practically hyperventilating. “You selfish, horrible daughter! I knew something was up when you insisted on cutting us off. You just wanted to pocket that compensation money for yourself! Timothy’s tuition is due right after New Year’s, and you knew that. You deliberately hid the money from us! How can you be so selfish!”

I actually laughed at the absurdity. “He’s not my kid! Is his mom dead or something? Why the hell should I be paying his tuition?”

Felicia’s eyes blazed with fury. “Now you’re wishing death on your own sister! Do you even have a conscience? Your sister’s raising a kid all by herself, and it’s not easy. You have compensation money, so why won’t you share it?”

My voice turned ice cold. “Her life being hard, is that somehow my fault? She’s what, in her thirties? And I’m supposed to support her? I already raised her when she was young, now I gotta raise her kid too? What, is her mother dead?”

I crossed my arms. “Oh wait, her mother is dead. That’s why she had to go steal someone else’s mom!”

I looked at Felicia.

“Since you’re so eager to play mommy to her, why don’t you give her the money and keep taking care of her yourself? Don’t come crawling to me about it. I’m not raising your ungrateful daughter!”

Without warning, she dropped to the floor and started wailing like someone had died, slapping her thighs for dramatic effect.

“I raised you for thirty years! Changed your diapers, wiped your nose, fed you every meal, and this is how you treat your own mother! Somebody come see this! Everyone needs to witness how awful she is!”

Michael lowered his voice into a threatening growl.

“Summer! Look what you’ve done to your mother! Why does a girl like you even need to buy a house anyway?”

He lunged for the contract I was about to sign, clearly planning to rip it to shreds.

The intern stood there frozen in shock. I had to nudge her before she snapped out of it and finally ran off to get security.

The whole scene was drawing a crowd. Other people looking at houses started gathering around, whispering to each other and pointing at us.

Autumn jumped in with this judgmental look plastered across her face.

‘Exactly, Summer. You took the family’s money to buy yourself a house without even thinking about Mom and Dad. Don’t you think that’s incredibly selfish?”

Then she turned to the crowd with this fake apologetic smile.

‘Sorry everyone, we didn’t mean to cause a scene! My sister just got laid off from her job and moved back home. Our parents said a few words to her about mooching off them, and she grabbed their savings and ran out here to buy a house…”

The way everyone looked at me completely shifted.

I cut her off before she could twist the story any further and pointed at the security

camera.

“Autumn, what d’you mean I took money from the family? Are you seriously trying to say I stole from you guys? ‘Cause that’s defamation, and I can sue you for

that!”

I pulled out my phone and aimed it at the three of them, keeping my voice steady.

“These are my biological parents and my adopted sister. Three days ago, after I got laid off, they demanded I hand over my entire severance package. They kicked me out of the house and disowned me. Now they’ve heard I’m buying a place with my own money, so they showed up to take it from me. They’re spinning lies and claiming I stole from the family.”

I kept going. “My parents’ combined pension is five thousand a month. My sister got divorced five years ago and hasn’t worked since. She’s been living off Mom and Dad’s pension and the twenty thousand I send home every single month.

“I even paid the down payment on the family house and covered the mortgage every month, but they transferred the deed to my sister anyway. After all that, I didn’t even get to keep my room. They shoved me in the storage closet.”

I looked straight at them. “So please, tell me what money there was for me to steal?

“I used my own severance pay to buy myself a place to live. What’s wrong with that?

“Do I have to hand over every cent I’ve earned to support your precious adopted daughter while I go live under a bridge and dig through dumpsters? Is that what it’ll take to make you happy?”

The crowd around us started nodding and muttering, calling out Michael and Felicia for playing favorites.

How could they treat their own flesh and blood daughter like garbage while spoiling some girl they weren’t even related to?

These weren’t family. They were straight-up parasites.

All three of them turned beet red.

Felicia lunged at me like she was gonna hit me, but security got there just in time to hold her back.

I picked up the contract from where it had fallen and carefully signed my name on

every line.

This wasn’t just a purchase agreement. It was the start of my new life.

From now on, I’d have a home that was actually mine.

A place where I didn’t have to watch anyone’s mood, didn’t have to sleep in some

cramped storage closet, and couldn’t get thrown out on the street at someone else’s whim.
