That afternoon, the nurses at their station started whispering.

“I heard they caught the guy who did the robbery. He was hiding in a block nearby.”

“He said he broke in to steal that night, Luna Mira caught him, so he pulled a knife to keep her quiet. Later a pot got knocked over in the kitchen, and that’s what started the fire.”

“The craziest part — Luna Mira kept calling for help the whole time, but her Alpha mate had already told them she’d cry wolf.”

“I heard Alpha Nathan is one of the commanders at the Pack Emergency Center himself.”

“The Territory Guard even came by to investigate today.”

I leaned back against the bed and said nothing.

By evening, Elowen came in with a folder.

“I found something,” she said, setting it on my lap. “Your man didn’t just fail to believe you.”

I looked down and opened it.

The first page was an internal comms log from the Pack Emergency Center.

8:05 p.m., Nathan had sent, [My wife might act up tonight. Hold every call from her. Delay all of them.]

8:06 p.m., again, [If she says the house is on fire or that she’s not feeling well, verify first. Don’t send a team out right away.]

8:07 p.m., [She loves to put on a show. Ignore her tonight.]

I turned page after page.

The second document came from the shared back-end between the Pack Emergency Center and the Pack Medical Center.

Flagged by: Nathan.

The note read, [Family member emotionally unstable. Suspected malicious harassment calls.]

Elowen sat at the edge of the bed, her voice cold.

“The Pack Emergency Center hanging up on you wasn’t one dispatcher’s mistake. They were following his orders.”

“The Pack Medical Center hesitating wasn’t a coincidence either. The linked system saw that flag.”

“Mira, he didn’t misunderstand you.”

“He sealed off your only way out with his own hands.”

I closed the file and set it calmly aside.

“Keep digging.”

Elowen looked at me.

“Are you sure? Once this goes up the chain, it’s more than just breaking the mate bond for him.”

“Doesn’t he treasure being an Alpha more than anything?” I lifted my eyes to her. “Then let him lose all of it.”

The next morning, the door opened.

This time it wasn’t Nathan.

It was an inspector from the Territory Guard, along with two investigators from the Moon Council.

The man in front flashed his badge.

“Luna Mira, we’re here to verify what happened.”

Elowen rose and gave up her seat.

The inspector sat down and got straight to it.

“We’ve recovered all the shift logs, the dispatch recordings, and the back-end records. We can now confirm that before the incident, Nathan used his position to illegally interfere with the rescue process.”

He set the printouts in front of me and read them out, word by word.

“My wife’s going to act up tonight. Hold every call from her.”

“If she reports a fire, don’t send a truck right away.”

“Call back to verify first. Leave her stewing overnight and she’ll settle down.”

My fingers slowly curled into the bedsheet.

The inspector went on.

“The first time, the dispatcher was about to send a truck. He aborted after seeing those orders. The 911 line pulled the full recording too.

In the verification call, besides Nathan, a woman’s voice clearly told the medical center to ignore the caller.”

Elowen asked, “Did you get a voiceprint match?”

One of the investigators answered. “We did. A 98.7 percent match to Lillian herself.”

The inspector set the papers down and looked at me.

“Based on the evidence we have so far.”

“Nathan is suspected of abusing his Alpha authority and unlawfully interfering with the Pack Emergency Center and Pack Medical Center response, delaying rescue and causing severe harm.”

“The Moon Council has suspended him from all duties.”

“The Territory Guard has also formally opened proceedings to strip him of his command.”

“If the evidence holds up, it goes to a full trial.”

I nodded.

“I want him held accountable.”

The inspector said gravely, “Rest assured. This won’t be brushed aside.”

I looked at the printouts, my voice level.

“He didn’t slip up.”

“He knew I was calling for help, and he told everyone not to save me.”

The inspector was quiet for two seconds, then stood.

“We’ll report everything as it is.”

After they left, Elowen gathered up the file.

“It’s started.”

I looked down at the IV needle on the back of my hand and said softly.

“It’s not enough.”
