Alpha Begged, Luna Walked Chapter 05

Magnus stared at the broken pendant in his palm. The faint pulse of magic had already faded to nothing.

The necklace had shattered on its own. No force. No blade. Just gone.

He dialed Nova. Again.

Nothing.

“Alpha?” The driver’s eyes met his in the rearview mirror. “We’re approaching the airport entrance. Should I proceed or turn back?”

The phone rang. And rang.

I could hear it, distantly, but my fingers wouldn’t move.

The cold was spreading.

I thought about the first time I saw him. I’d been trailing my mother on one of her expeditions—territory scouting, she called it. Unclaimed land.

Rogue land, really.

Magnus’s grandfather had just died. He was eighteen, alone, trying to bury the only family he had left. He’d gone door to door, begging other strays for help, for anything.

He collapsed at my feet. Three days without eating.

I begged my mother to save him.

She buried his grandfather with honor. She brought him back to our pack.

After that, Magnus was never far from my side. I knew he loved me—the way he looked at me was too bright to hide.

But I was promised to another. Silvermoon Pack’s heir. An alliance forged before I understood what alliances cost.

So he kept his love tucked behind his teeth. Guarded me. Stayed.

When I was cast out, Silvermoon voided the contract. Magnus turned down the Lycan King’s personal invitation. Didn’t even hesitate.

“They need me,” he said. “You need me.”

We built Blue Tide together. The pack called him my wolf. My best dog.

I hated that. So I made him mine in truth.

He became Alpha. I gave him everything.

And still, somehow, he left me first.

The light was narrowing, slipping through my fingers like water.

Footsteps. Hard, running, stopping right beside me.

A sound tore through the air, my name, broken and raw.

I tried to open my eyes.

Magnus?

No. Not Magnus.

The real Magnus was still in the car.

“Go back,” he said. “Now.”

Then Eden’s voice, soft and wounded. “It’s a trick, Alpha. She doesn’t want you to go with me. If you run back every time she cries wolf, she’ll never stop.”

Her lashes lowered. “I was so looking forward to this hunt. I’ve been preparing all week. But if you want to turn around.”

He closed his eyes.

“…Proceed to the airport.”

The plane lifted into the grey sky. Eden pressed close to the window, breath fogging the glass.

“Alpha, I’ve never been abroad before.”

Her cheeks were flushed. Her eyes shone with undisguised worship.

“It feels like a dream.”

He reached over and smoothed her hair.

Like petting a small, well-behaved animal.

It wasn’t unpleasant.
