Cassian sat alone in the interrogation room.

Since he’d arrived at the Stonebrook Police Department, the officer beside him had asked three times.

“Do you admit to the charges?”

He never even looked up.

Everyone assumed his silence came from betrayal.

Dr. Vance had turned on him. He’d been hauled into the police station.

His pride couldn’t take the hit. So he refused to speak.

Only Cassian knew the truth.

From the moment Ava called another man “Honey”, something inside his head had shattered.

One question kept replaying over and over.

When did Ava get married? Did she really marry someone else?

When did that happen? He’d only sent her overseas six months ago!

The night before she left, she’d spent the entire night outside his apartment.

The next morning when he pushed open the door, she was curled up on the steps, her lips blue from the cold.

The second she saw him, she threw herself into his arms and wrapped both arms around his waist.

“Cassian, I’m sorry. Please don’t leave me.”

The memory pulled him back to the winter before.

Ava had been curled up on his couch, wrapped in his jacket.

Her toes were red from the cold as she kept trying to burrow into his arms.

“Quit it,” he’d said with a frown, not looking up from his papers. “I’m working.”

She ignored him, burying her face against his chest and mumbled, “Cassian, just hold me. Please?”

He finally put the papers down.

One glance at her was all it took.

He reached out and pulled her into his arms.

She immediately snuggled closer like a content little cat.

After finding the perfect spot, she tipped her head up and kissed his chin.

Once, twice, three times—until he finally couldn’t help but laugh, grabbing the back of her neck and silencing her with a kiss.

Another memory surfaced.

She’d gotten drunk and refused to let go of him. Her cheeks were flushed.

Looking up at him, she’d pouted.

“Cassian. You can’t look at any other women. Just look at me.”

He leaned against the bar, deliberately saying nothing. She grew anxious.

Standing on tiptoe, she tried to kiss him.

She couldn’t reach. Her eyes immediately turned red.

“Lean down—just lean down a little. Please?”

He did. And he kissed her for a very, very long time.

Later, she’d fallen asleep on his shoulder.

She murmured something in her sleep.

He hadn’t caught it. So he leaned closer.

“I really, really like you.”

Back then, her sparkling eyes had been filled with no one but him.

Then the memories shattered. And the hospital room came crashing back.

He saw Ava curled against another man. Saw her fingers clutching the sleeve of his coat.

Saw her bury her entire face against him, her shoulders trembling.

He heard her call him, “Honey.”

He’d seen Ava depend on him countless times.

A sharp pain throbbed through his temples. His stomach twisted violently.

Without warning, he slammed his cuffed fists onto the metal table.

A dull thud echoed through the room.

“Cassian! Don’t try anything!”

The officer barked at him. Cassian didn’t hear a word.

There was only one voice inside his head. Over and over.

Her eyes were supposed to be on me. Only me.

Just then, the interrogation room door opened.

A middle-aged man walked in with a file in his hand.

“Let him go.”
