After Ten Years of Revenge, He Built Time Machine Bring Me Back Chapter 10

For nearly thirty years of his life, Silas had never known what true, soul-crushing despair felt like.

“After Elowen was incarcerated, your father issued orders under your name to subject her to constant abuse inside the facility. She faced daily physical assaults, her waist sliced open with paper shards on a regular

basis. The worst of it was the industrial accident your father orchestrated on the work detail-that’s how she lost all hearing in her left ear.”

That explained everything. Every time he’d spoken to her after parole, she’d struggled to catch his words, and

he’d only grown annoyed with her ignorance back then.

Now a sharp, aching pity spread thick through his chest.

Silas stopped rejecting food entirely, shoveling the meal the assistant had brought down as fast as he could.

“Is she still alive? Where is she now? Is she okay?”

For three years he’d left her untouched by his cruelty. He’d clung to the fragile hope that Elowen’s stubborn

will to survive had kept both her and Lila safe.

The assistant silently slid an official prison medical report across the table toward him.

Silas flipped the pages open, every line burning into his brain as the assistant spoke aloud.

“Elowen was diagnosed with Stage IV Gastric Carcinoma while still locked behind bars. Three years have

passed since her release-she died out in Westside Slum Flats a long time ago.”

A metal chopstick slipped out of Silas’s grasp, clattering loudly against the hardwood tabletop.

No. It couldn’t be true.

Elowen had grown up as a surgeon’s daughter, taught strict cleanliness and healthy habits her entire

childhood. How could she develop terminal stomach cancer?

Then the memories crashed back one after another. From the day he’d framed her, she’d been forced to

survive on moldy scraps, sleeping under bridges and trash heaps. She’d never once had the chance to care

for her health.

He thought back to all the bloodied tissue balls he’d spotted in the lounge private booth three years prior,

mocking her for staging fake injuries to gain sympathy, even forcing gallons of alcohol down her throat.

How much agony had she endured in silence all that time?

“That can’t be right,” Silas’s voice shook, tight and raw. “She fought through every hardship thrown at her. She

wouldn’t leave Lila all alone in this world.”

Back during prep school, even after endless daily bullying, her bright eyes had still held hope for the future

She’d told him countless times.

“I’ll hold on until the day the truth comes out. I just hope you won’t hate yourself when you finally learn the

truth”

The assistant’s words crushed every last shred of fragile hope he’d clung to.

“Before you sent her to the slums three years ago, Lila jumped to her death. Celia was the one who

tormented the girl until she couldn’t bear living anymore.”

Her only remaining family was gone. What reason had a broken, wrongfully convicted woman left to keep fighting to stay alive?

“What?” Silas froze rigid, as if struck by lightning.

The assistant recounted every cruel act Celia had committed against Lila behind his back.

Silas’s rage ignited instantly, blazing hot and unbridled.

“Where is that vile woman now?”

Celia had never been anything more than a distraction he’d used to torture Elowen. He’d cut all ties with her

the second he’d stopped punishing Elowen three years prior-she’d outlived all use to him.

How dare she lay hands on Lila?

“Even if you seek vengeance against Celia, Elowen and her family will never come back to life,” the assistant

said quietly, pleading with him to calm down.

Silas’s anger fizzled out, swallowed whole by endless despair and crippling remorse.

He was right. Nothing he did could reverse what had already been lost. Even if Elowen and Lila somehow

still lived, the damage between him and Elowen could never be mended.

Once the assistant left, Silas locked himself inside the master bathroom.

He moved like a hollow, soulless corpse, picking up a steel safety razor and slicing deep gashes across his

wrists, sinking down into the cold bathwater to wait for death to take him.

“I’m so sorry, Elowen.”

His voice faded weaker and weaker, his eyelids growing heavy.

A shrill classroom bell blared suddenly, ringing loud in his ears.

Silas jolted upright hard, knocking over the desk and sending chairs crashing to the floor with a loud racket.

His teacher stared down at him from the front of the lecture hall, utterly confused.

“No need to jump out of your seat the second class ends, Mr. Voss.”

Silas glanced down at the prep school uniform covering his body, then up at the large analog clock hanging

on the wall.

A surge of overwhelming joy crashed over him-he’d traveled back in time.

He’d woken up on the exact day those boys had broken Elowen’s arm during bullying.
