After Rebirth, I Refused to Marry the Major, and He Panicked Chapter 05

The general’s face went pale as death.

Base medics rushed in, but they could only shake their heads helplessly.

Penelope stood frozen, her eyes darting wildly as she backed toward the door.

The general was about to order her detained when Colt suddenly jerked awake. He shoved himself upright, even flexed his arms as if to prove his strength.

“Just a temporary reaction! I feel fine now!”

His complexion was rosy, his movements steady.

He almost looked normal.

But the medics exchanged worried glances, their mouths opening and closing without words.

I spoke coldly. “I suggest you use what little time you have left to find another cure.”

“Otherwise, the Sterlings will be planning a funeral.”

“You-!” Colt’s face twisted with rage. “Elena, shut your mouth!”

He dropped to one knee before the general. “Grandfather! Elena has ill intentions! If Reid marries her, it’ll

destroy him! You should hand her over to me-”

“That’s enough!” The general’s voice cracked like a whip.

“Dr. Vance is my guest. Show some respect.”

“And your cousin’s affairs are none of your concern. Focus on yourself, and don’t forget what I said earlier.”

At those last words, Colt’s eyes dimmed.

Then a senior medic stepped forward, his voice urgent. “General, Major Sterling’s organ function is deteriorating rapidly. This is-”

Colt shoved the old doctor aside. “Quack! You’re in cahoots with Elena!”

Penelope forced herself to sound calm. “My methods are absolutely reliable–”

She pivoted sharply, fixing her gaze on me. “But Dr. Vance, can you really save Reid?”

I didn’t answer. I turned and followed Margaret out the door.

When we reached Reid’s officer quarters, his orderly came running out in a panic.

“Mrs. Sterling! It’s Reid! He’s collapsed!”

“All the base doctors were called to the general’s building-we don’t know what to do…”

Margaret went limp, nearly crumpling to the floor. Her hands fumbled with her bracelet and necklace,

pressing them into mine.

“Dr. Vance, there’s no time left-only you can save him now…”

I gave the jewelry back and shook my head. “I made a promise. I’ll keep it.”

I was saving Reid partly out of spite, but also to prove something to myself.

I stepped into his room. The air smelled faintly of cedar and old paper-the scent of a man who spent more

time with documents than with people.

I asked Margaret to wait outside, locked the door, and turned to the young man on the bed.

Reid Sterling.

He had a quiet, scholarly handsomeness-clear features, a gentle brow.

Seeing his face, I felt a strange jolt. A flicker of something I couldn’t quite name.

I lay down beside him and whispered three words near his ear.

“Little pine tree.”

His eyes fluttered open-unfocused at first, clouded with confusion. Then slowly, slowly, they sharpened with

recognition.
