After Rebirth, I Refused to Marry the Major, and He Panicked Chapter 02

In my past life, after Penelope Shaw—the so-called prodigy physician the Sterlings had brought in—killed herself on my wedding night, Colt was convinced I was a liar.

He believed I’d stolen Penelope’s research and faked my abilities just to climb into the Sterling family.

He loved Penelope. So her death became my crime.

He was certain her “targeted antidote” had done the work.

But he never understood: genetic erosion couldn’t be stopped by a simple drug.

It was me—that wedding night, through my unique bio-resonant field—who had purged the poison from his blood.

He never gave me a chance to explain. One injection, and I was dead. My body, thrown to the swamp.

But in the moment my soul scattered, I saw clearly.

Penelope was the real fraud.

She’d known that once I married into the Sterlings, her position would collapse.

She’d been siphoning research funds and classified data, planning to disappear, until the family’s enemies caught up with her and forced her to take a drug that unhinged her mind. That was the real reason she jumped.

Now, let’s see how Colt Sterling survives his twentieth birthday without me.

“General, the information you have may not be complete. My ability comes with certain uncertainties.”

I set my teacup down, my voice calm.

“Rather than gambling on an unreliable variable with me, you’d be better off finding another woman with a similar purification gene.”

I declined gently.

Before the general could respond, the door burst open. Colt shoved past the guards, his voice strained with barely hidden panic.

“Dad! Once Dr. Shaw’s targeted antidote finishes final validation, the toxin will be cured! Don’t let Elena Vance fool you!”

His eyes darted to me, blazing with accusation. He thought I’d come to him first—spun a lie to become Mrs. Sterling.

The general sighed heavily. “Colt, Dr. Shaw’s approach is too risky. Our family has relied on bond with purifiers for generations. Even I survived only because of your mother—”

“Sir!” Colt snapped to attention, his tone final. “I request you trust Dr. Shaw’s work. She can do this!”

I twirled my teacup, ready to leave. The argument was none of my concern anymore.

Then the gentle woman from the living room hurried in, carrying a small portable medical cooler. She hesitated at the sight of the general.

He waved her forward.

She set the cooler before me, then took my hands with trembling fingers. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her composure barely holding.

“Dr. Vance…” Her voice wavered. “Do you have any other sisters? Please—I’m begging you—save my son, Reid Sterling!”

Behind her, an assistant murmured, “Dr. Vance is an only child. She’s the only one in this generation with the purifying gene.”

“Hush,” I said softly, cutting off the interruption.

Margaret caught herself, blinking back tears. “Dr. Vance, I’ve heard all Vance women have this gift. You’re our only hope!”

She pressed my hands tighter, her desperation palpable.

“Since you don’t want to marry Colt…”

“Would you consider my son, Reid Sterling?”
