After Rebirth, I Cleared My Name Through a Drunk Driving Incident Chapter 10

After Rebirth, I Cleared My Name Through a Drunk Driving Incident Chapter 10

The court moved fast

Mark Lawson, the mastermind, was convicted of

firstdegree murder, conspiracy, false accusation

perjury, and defamation

He got life without parole

Amanda Pierce got life without parole too as an

accomplice to firstdegree murder

The neighbor got convicted for false testimony and was ordered to publicly apologize

I sat in court and listened to the verdict

When it was over, I didn’t feel triumphant. I just felt

free

The injustice from my last life. The hatred from this

one. All of it finally ended there

Jessica, I’m sorry. You lost your life, but I got justice for

you in the end

The people who hurt you paid for it

Now you can rest

My DUI sentence still stood

Oneyear license suspension. Twothousanddollar

fine. Mandatory education classes. Forty hours of

community service

I accepted all of it

One punishment in exchange for my life, my innocence, and the truth

It was worth it

The day I finished serving the sentence, the sunlight

felt blindingly bright

Harding was waiting for me outside the station

Go live your life, she said, patting my shoulder. It’s

over now.”

I nodded, and my eyes stung

If not for her, if not for the way she held the line and saw through the setup right away, clearing my name

would’ve been so much harder

We stayed friends after that

She taught me something I’d never forget

Justice may come late. But it still comes

I divorced Mark

Because of the affair, the murder plot, and the setup

he walked away with nothing

No property. No money. Nothing except bars and

regret

I sold the Houston apartment

Then I moved to Denver and reopened my studio

At night, when everything got quiet, I still thought about my last life sometimes

What it felt like to be abandoned. To scream the truth

and have nobody believe me. To be crushed under

crime I didn’t commit

But I wasn’t afraid anymore

I came back from a death sentence. I exposed the people who killed Jessica and tried to kill me too

I wasn’t that helpless woman anymore

I was alive. I was innocent. I was free

The road ahead was long

No more schemes. No more traps. No more blood

Just sunlight. Just time. Just a life that finally belonged

to me

Later, I visited Jessica’s grave

Her picture on the headstone still looked so young. Still

smiling. Still kind

I set down a bouquet of white roses and stood there

long time

Jessica,I said softly, they were caught. They got

life. You can rest now.”

The wind moved through the cemetery and stirred the

roses

I didn’t know if she could hear me. I hoped she could

I still wanted to say I was sorry

If I’d seen Mark clearly earlier, maybe she wouldn’t

have died

But there are no ifs

All I could do now was bring the truth to light and make

sure the guilty paid

When I turned to leave, the sun was warm

The cemetery was quiet. Wind. Birdsong. Blue sky

overhead

And Harding’s words came back to me

If life gives you one more chance, that’s a blessing

Live every day you didn’t get to live the first time.”

I would

I rebuilt the studio from scratch

Denver’s real estate market was active, and once word spread, clients slowly came back

When people asked about my past, I kept it simple

The past was over. What mattered was now. What mattered was what came next

I moved into a new loft downtown

Two bedrooms. One living room. Not big, but enough

I kept succulents on the balcony, and they thrived

under the Colorado sun

On weekends, I met friends sometimes. Sometimes

went to Red Rocks. Sometimes I stayed home and

cooked for myself

The days were quiet. Steady. Good

And when I couldn’t sleep, I’d sit on the balcony and

think about how close it all came

If I hadn’t looked up and seen that checkpoint

If I hadn’t had that bottle of whiskey

If I hadn’t made it to the station before 8:30

One mistake in any link of that chain, and I would’ve lost everything

Maybe my freedom. Maybe my life

But fate gave me one chance. And I took it

I still thought about that night in the holding cell

That tiny room. That ugly white light. That clock

ticking on the wall

It was the longest night of my life. And the most

important one

If I’d broken then, if I’d given up, none of the rest

would’ve happened

Sometimes life really does come down to one step

Once in a while, I wondered what I’d say if I ever saw

Mark again

Then I realized the answer was simple

Nothing

He didn’t need my forgiveness. I didn’t need his

apology

The law had already judged him. He owed Jessica a life

He’d pay for it with his freedom

That was enough

As for me, I just wanted to live

To live every day I lost the first time

The sky was clear. And the future was still long

The End
