It was an abandoned park close to school.

Stray cats rummaged through the grass and around the trash bins, looking for food.

I walked aimlessly until a kitten rubbed against my leg, meowing.

I couldn’t just ignore it.

So I crouched down, broke off a few pieces of a hot dog, and fed it.

A moment later, someone crouched beside me too.

He didn’t say anything at first.

After thinking for a second, he pulled out a cat treat and dangled it in front of the kitten.

That was when I realized Tavish Crowe was kind an absolute menace.

The kitten’s eyes lit up. Just as it leaned in to bite, Tavish lifted the treat higher.

The kitten deflated.

Then he reached over and teased its tail.

I couldn’t help it. I slapped his hand.

Only then did he finally put the treat down.

He laughed. “Wow. This cat is a lot like you.”

“Cute, but with an attitude.”

I didn’t answer.

I stood up and dusted off my pants.

Tavish followed behind me.

We walked one after the other.

After a while, he clicked his tongue lightly.

“You know, it would’ve been nice if you’d met him earlier.”

“Lachlan looks cold on the outside, but he’s actually easy to get along with. He and Maribel met online.”

“Back then, his grandfather had just passed, and his uncle was fighting him over the Crest family trust.”

“It was a brutal time.”

“The only time I ever saw Lachlan smile, talk, or eat like a normal person was when he picked up his phone.”

I didn’t tell him the truth.

That wasn’t how it happened.

I had met Lachlan long before Maribel did.

Lachlan already knew the person who talked to him all those nights was me.

But so what?

In the end, he regretted it.

Seeing Tavish still talking to himself, I pretended to be surprised.

“Oh? Why are you telling me all this?”

He looked at me for a moment.

Then he smiled.

“Because your eyes were pretty obvious back then.”
