After I Dressed as a Man, He Mistook Me for His Rival Chapter 08

At the next stop, of all people, Maribel and Lachlan got on too.

Lachlan glanced at me, like there was something he wanted to say.
Then his eyes shifted away.

Maribel, however, ran toward me with surprise lighting up her face.

“Sutton, why didn’t you come home last night?”

As she spoke, she slipped off her backpack like it was the most natural thing in the world and tossed it onto me.

“Hurry, get up. Let your sister sit.”

“It’s so hot outside. I just washed my hair yesterday.”

Beside me, Tavish frowned slightly.

When he saw me start to get up, he reached out and took Maribel’s backpack himself.

“Enough. I’ll carry it.”

He glanced at me. “Sutton isn’t feeling well. Let him keep the seat.”

The moment he said that, Maribel looked stunned.

Her eyes moved between me and Tavish.

“When did you two get so close?”

Then she pouted. “Besides, what could be wrong with Sutton? He’s so dramatic.”

Seeing Maribel unhappy, Lachlan finally lifted his eyes.

“Nice manners.”

“You really let a girl stand while you sit there?”

He paused, then gave a cold little laugh and looked away.

“But I guess someone this starved for attention would be jealous of anyone.”

His words were sharp.

Merciless.

Everyone around us turned to look at me.

The floating comments burst into laughter.

[I called it. Sutton should’ve stayed away and let the whole thing die as a pretty little misunderstanding.]

[Now Lachlan knows, and he probably spent all night rereading those messages, getting more disgusted with every word.]

[Too bad the girl behind that account wasn’t really Maribel.]

[Honestly? Lachlan keeps going after Sutton because he can tell Sutton was into him. That probably makes him sick.]

Only then did I understand.

Lachlan still couldn’t get past it. I had used a girl’s account, talked to him for six months, and made him pour his feelings into the wrong person.

In that instant, I finally understood what it meant for a heart to die.

The comments were right.

Someone as plain and ordinary as me…

Even if he learned I was a girl, he probably still wouldn’t like me.

Beside me, Tavish lost his temper.

“Lachlan, what the hell is wrong with you?”

“You don’t even know. Sutton had a fever last night. He spent the whole night in urgent care.”

Just then, the bus pulled up to the next stop.

The driver opened the doors.

I met Lachlan’s slightly stunned eyes and suddenly felt like I never wanted to see him again.

I stood up hard and gave the seat to Maribel.

Then I shouldered my backpack and ran off the bus.
