“You’re not going anywhere!”

I turned to walk out the door.

Someone shoved me hard from behind, and I stumbled and fell to the floor.

Nina had pushed me in anger. She stood blocking the doorway.

From the hospital bed, Elliot spoke up, sobbing,

“Ethan, I ate so much of the cake you sent.”

“The glass shards cut my tongue, but I don’t mind. I just want an apology from you.”

I braced myself against the wall and slowly got up.

My ankle twisted when Nina pushed me.

Every small movement sent a stabbing pain through me.

I frowned and looked coldly at Elliot, my voice sharp with sarcasm:

“That cake—you had someone dress up like me and deliver it, didn’t you?”

“Cutting your own tongue just to sell the act.”

“You really are ruthless!”

Then I turned to Vivian, my voice cold,

“I’ll tell you the truth. A couple of days ago, my hand was—”

Elliot suddenly cried out.

His sharp accusation cutting me off.

“I know you hate me, but I never thought you’d hate me this much!”

“Not only did you hurt me, now you’re trying to pin all the blame on me!”

With that, Elliot buried himself under the covers and refused to come out.

Vivian held back her anger and scolded me coldly,

“Enough. When did you become like this?”

“Petty, vicious. Do you even look like a father anymore?”

“What kind of example is this for Nina?”

When did I become like this?

I couldn’t remember either.

Maybe it was the first time Elliot framed me.

When she and our daughter believed him without question, I cried all night.

Or maybe it was when she started finding me boring and stopped taking me to parties, replacing me with Elliot as her escort.

I sulked for three days.

Or maybe it was when I cooked for her at five in the morning, and she turned around and sent it to Elliot as a late-night snack.

I quietly hurt for a long time afterward.

There were too many moments like that.

Too many for me to even know where to start.

Vivian’s expression tightened.

She said coldly, “Now, apologize to Elliot right this second. Then this is over.”

I forced three words out through my teeth,

“In your dreams.”

Vivian’s face went dark, a flash of fury in her eyes.

“Ethan, say that again!”

“You think I really won’t do something to you?”

I let out a cold laugh, gathered my nerve, and repeated,

“I said, in your dreams. I won’t apologize for something I didn’t do.”

“My conscience is clear.”

Vivian was completely enraged.

She picked up the half-eaten cake left on the table.

The caregiver beside her grabbed my chin, and she shoved it hard into my mouth.

“Seems you won’t shed a tear until you see the coffin.”

“This is your punishment for being stubborn.”

“Since you won’t apologize, then you’ll feel the same pain as Elliot.”

I choked and coughed.

Frosting mixed with glass shards stung my throat.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Elliot watching me with a smug, gloating look.

In front of me, Vivian looked at me with disgust.

Seeing that disgust in her eyes, I suddenly felt like I was looking at a stranger.

I couldn’t connect her to the girl she used to be.

Then it hit me.

The person I once loved had died long ago.

Vivian wasn’t her anymore.

The room was noisy with accusations.

I didn’t want to hear them. I didn’t want to listen anymore.

A tear slid down my cheek.

The system’s mechanical voice sounded in my head.

“Host, thirty seconds until departure. Twenty-nine.”

I braced myself against the wall and inched toward the window.

Seeing my movement, Vivian froze, then sneered coldly:

“What are you doing now?”

“Do you think threatening me with death will make me regret anything?”

“Dream on. I know exactly what kind of person you are.”

“You don’t have the guts to die!”

I turned to look at Vivian.

There was nothing but deep disgust in her eyes.

I pulled the corner of my mouth into a smile.

“Maybe it was because I still held a sliver of hope for you that I followed you here.”

“But now I know how ridiculous I was.”

“Vivian, you’re pathetic.”

“You can’t even tell right from wrong. My sincerity was wasted on you.”

“You failed me. I will never forgive you.”

“In this life, we will never meet again!”

Under her stunned gaze, I poured out everything I’d been holding in for so long.

Vivian’s lips trembled.

She finally forced out one sentence,

“Ethan, you’ve gone insane!”

I didn’t answer. I reached out and touched the windowsill.

At that moment, my heart was dead.

The next second, I climbed over the window and jumped.
