After 28 Lockouts, I Finally Locked Him Out Chapter 20

A few days later, a black Bentley pulled up to the entrance of the winery.

Julian got out and walked quickly toward me.

“Clara.”

I didn’t stop, intending to walk right past him.

He reached out and blocked my path, his voice hoarse.

“Clara, I saw the footage. And the server logs. I know everything now.”

Only then did I lift my eyes to him.

It had only been a few days, but he looked like a different person.

There were dark circles under his eyes. He hadn’t shaved. His suit was wrinkled. He looked as if he hadn’t slept in days.

“I wanted to come find you sooner,” he said. “But I didn’t dare.”

“For five years, I was wrong. I let you suffer. I never protected you. I locked you out of the system again and again. I was wrong about Maya, too. Leo told one lie, and I canceled her summer camp.”

As he spoke, his voice began to tremble.

“Clara, I was a terrible husband. I know that.”

He raised a hand as if to touch me, then let it fall when I flinched away.

“I always felt guilty about Eleanor. Leo was three when we divorced, and I always felt I owed him a complete family. So when he acted out, I gave in. When he complained, I believed him.”
