From the sofa, Leo shouted, “Dad, she’s just doing this for attention! You never should have married her. Let her go!”

I ignored Leo, my eyes fixed on Eleanor.

“If you care so much about this family, why did you sign the divorce papers?”

Eleanor’s face fell.

“Enough.” Julian pulled her behind him, shielding her from me. “What happened between Eleanor and me is not for you to comment on. She’s here to help. Don’t make this difficult for her.”

I glanced at him.

There was no trace of my old expectations left in my eyes.

“I’m not interested in your history,” I said. “And I don’t have time to make things difficult for her.”
