Acting for Survival- Playing the Innocent Heroine to Escape the Villain’s Trap Chapter 04

I’d prepared my resignation letter and a bank card.

It held every cent of my savings. Richard was an incredible boss—generous to an absurd degree.

To outsiders, it probably looked like I was his kept mistress.

My resignation letter was full of nothing but sincere, carefully worded praise for him.

I’d just stood up from my desk when the sales manager rushed over.

“Nancy, please come help us. Mr. Smith is furious.”

“The whole office is freezing cold. Everyone got chewed out badly.”

I sighed. “Even if I go, it won’t change anything.”

“That’s not true. Every time you walk in, his mood softens right away.”

That wasn’t real at all. Still, I grabbed a cup of coffee and knocked gently on his office door.

“Come in,” Richard’s voice called out.

As I stepped inside, everyone stared at me like I was their last hope.

I smiled sweetly. “Mr. Smith, your coffee.”

Richard glanced at me. “Did you add sugar?”

I froze. “You never take sugar normally…”

When people were in a bad mood, they really liked making things hard for others.

Richard smirked. “It’s up to you today.”

He waved a hand, and the entire staff fled the room in sheer relief.

I bit my lip, unsure how to bring up quitting.

Then Richard spoke softly, “Nancy.”

“Yes?”

“Don’t act like that at work.”

Huh? What did I do?

Richard smiled and tapped his own lips lightly.

Is this… workplace harassment?

When I didn’t move, he tapped his lips again.

He held so much power here—I didn’t dare refuse.

But things were different now.

I said firmly and seriously, “Mr. Smith! Maybe customs are different for you, but secretaries where I’m from don’t kiss their bosses!”

After a long pause, Richard burst out laughing. “So yesterday was just an accident?”

The biggest accident of my entire life!

He seemed relaxed now, so this would be the perfect time to hand in my resignation.

I passed him the letter.

Richard’s smile froze instantly.

He held the corner of the paper between his fingers, reading it slowly.

He let out a cold chuckle. “What’s this supposed to mean?”

I smiled gently. “Thank you for mentoring me these three years. My career goals have changed, and I want to move toward new opportunities.”

Richard nodded calmly. “You want a raise?”

I felt a sting of disappointment. After all these years together, he thought I was only after money?

I let out a bitter smile. “Mr. Smith, it’s never about the money.”

Richard kept signing documents without looking up. “One million a year.”

“Money can’t buy everything I’m willing to do.”

“Ten million a year.”

“I’ll do absolutely anything you need!”

The bullet comments exploded all over the screen.

【Nancy has way too much self-control. I would’ve folded at a million right away!】

【Just give me half a million, I’ll sign on forever.】

【Quit undercutting the market! Thirty thousand is enough for me…】

【What is Richard doing?! Keeping her close is gonna blow up huge later!】
