My hands freeze. “These are my personal belongings.”

“The money you used to buy them is Dad’s.” He lifts his chin defiantly. “Dad’s money belongs to the pack, and pack property doesn’t belong to outsiders.”

Outsiders?

I slowly look up at him.

My four-year-old pup is standing right in front of me, glaring at me like I’m a common thief.

The ice in his eyes is even colder than his father’s.

“I’m only taking this.” I grip the amulet tighter and stand up. “I don’t want anything else.”

“No!” He steps right into my path, spreading his arms wide to block the door. “You can’t steal from the pack!”

“Leo, move.”

“I won’t!” he yells. “You’re a beggar! A thief! Auntie Serena said once you’re kicked out, you can never come back. If you take things, you’re stealing!”

A sharp pain pulses at my temples. “I’m going to say this one last time. Move.”

“No! Drop it!”

He lunges at me, his small hands grabbing the velvet pouch I’m holding.

Instinctively, I yank my hand back. The worn velvet tears open.

The moonstone amulet slips out, hitting the concrete floor and shattering into jagged pieces.

I freeze, the world around me going completely numb.

I can still hear my mother’s voice from the day she fastened it around my neck.

“Maeve, this has protected our bloodline for six generations. One day, you’ll give it to your daughter, or your son’s mate…”

I don’t have a daughter. And I’ll never have a son’s mate.

I only had this stone.

Generations of history, and it ends with me, shattered by my own flesh and blood.

Leo stands there, looking at the broken pieces, before muttering under his breath, “It’s your own fault for not letting go.”

My eyes burn red as I stare at him. “I told you, your grandmother gave this to me.”

“Do you even know why she’s stuck in the pack healing center right now?”

Leo blinks, taking a slight step back.

“I don’t know any grandmother. I just know she’s a useless old hag bleeding Dad’s money dry…”
