I Ran Away Carrying the Mafia King’s Child Chapter 08

I Ran Away Carrying the Mafia King’s Child Chapter 08

He started learning how to take care of me.

He pored over pregnancy recipe books for three whole days, and finally brought me a bowl of fish soup that actually looked normal.

I took a sip, and it tasted surprisingly good.

“Didn’t mix up salt and sugar this time?” I raised an eyebrow at him.

The tips of his ears turned pink. “I had a seven-star hotel chef guide me over the phone.”

I laughed at his awkwardness and drank the soup slowly, savoring it.

For once, the atmosphere was warm and peaceful.

A financial news segment played on TV, and the anchor mentioned a familiar name-

Dante Marino, CEO of the Marino Group.

Massimo’s greatest business rival.

At the sound of the name, Massimo’s expression turned cold in an instant.

He grabbed the remote to change the channel at once.

He let out a cold huff, undisguised disdain in his eyes.

“What’s wrong?” I asked curiously.

He glanced at me, seeming hesitant whether to speak up.

The villa was deathly quiet, save for the soft clink of my spoon against the bowl.

Perhaps the calm atmosphere lowered his guard, and he finally spoke, his voice low and rough.

“That cocktail party at Obsidian Crown Hotel that night…”

My heart skipped a beat.

“I was drugged.”

The spoon slipped out of my hand and clattered loudly into the bowl.

“He tried to film a scandal to crash the Romano family’s stock price.”

“I spent three months tracking down the person who slipped me the drug.”

“I always thought you were working with them.”

“That’s why I said… I’d ruin you.”

He explained haltingly, like a child who’d made a terrible mistake and didn’t know how to

apologize.

So I wasn’t his target of revenge at all. I was just an unlucky stranger accidentally caught in the

middle of his feud.

He fell silent, his gaze drifting down to my belly, his voice soft as a feather.

“I’m sorry…”

“Massimo!” I snapped his full name, anger flaring up.

“I’m here.” He sat up straight at once, staring at me nervously.

I glared at him, my eyes stinging with tears. Waves of pent-up grievance and delayed anger washed

over me.

But looking at his ridiculous yet pitiful flustered look, most of my anger melted away instantly.

Later on, Nico came all the way to Velmora to see me.

Massimo found out and had him stopped right at the gate.

“Tell him to leave,” he said coldly.

He was sitting on the sofa, knitting a baby sweater for our unborn child.

Lately, the infamous Mafia King had taken up knitting-though his handiwork looked more like a lopsided fishing net than a sweater.

“Massimo, Nico is my friend,” I said helplessly.

“Doesn’t matter. No boys allowed near you.” He didn’t even look up.

“There’s no such thing as a pure friendship between a man and a woman.”

“Not unless he sees you as a brother, like I used to.”

I almost laughed out loud at that.

“Don Romano, were you blind back then?”

“I was right in front of you for three whole years, a beautiful woman, and you actually thought I was a man?”

Massimo’s knitting needles paused.

He set the sweater down and looked up at me, his eyes deep and dark.

“You know what, Riley?”

“There were several times I suspected I might be bisexual.”

My eyes went wide. “Huh?”

“Because whenever I looked at you…”

He leaned in and brushed a light kiss over the corner of my mouth.

“My heart would race.”

“Even when I thought you were a man, I couldn’t stop wanting to be close to you.”

“That night at the hotel… even drugged and drunk, I wouldn’t have touched anyone else.”

“Only you.”

My face burned bright red all over.

This man was getting way too good at sweet-talking.
