I Ran Away Carrying the Mafia King’s Child Chapter 04

I Ran Away Carrying the Mafia King’s Child Chapter 04

The air in this quiet coastal town down south smelled of briny seawater.

I rented a small single-story cottage right by the ocean.

Remote and isolated, it was the perfect place to lay low.

To make ends meet, I went back to work at a tiny local clinic as a medical assistant.

The clinic’s owner was Nico Valentini, a retired military veteran with a permanent limp from an old

mission injury.

He was a man of few words, but thoughtful and observant.

I let my hair grow out little by little, and my belly swelled steadily with each passing month.

Nico never asked about my family or the baby’s father. He simply left prenatal vitamins on my desk without a word, day after day.

For a while, life settled into quiet, uneventful calm.

Until three months later, on a stormy typhoon night.

I was trying to follow a pregnancy recipe and make soup, fighting back another wave of nausea.

Suddenly, a sharp screech of brakes cut through the quiet night.

A black Maybach barreled through the pouring rain, stopping abruptly right outside the clinic door.

The door opened, and Massimo stepped out. Rain soaked his designer suit, his black trench coat whipping wildly in the gale.

He walked straight into the clinic, his bloodshot eyes locking onto me instantly.

His gaze skimmed past my face and dropped straight to my slightly rounded belly, impossible to hide even under baggy clothes.

He stepped toward me slowly, the icy aura rolling off him freezing me to the bone.

I forgot how to breathe entirely.

He made no move to touch me at first, simply looking down at me with a cold, knowing smirk.

“Dr. Ferraro. How long did you plan on hiding?”

The soup spoon slipped from my hand and clattered to the floor.

It was over.

That was the only thought in my head.

He’d found me.

His threat to ruin me still echoed in my mind.

I instinctively wrapped my arms around my stomach and stepped back, only to hit the cold kitchen counter-nowhere left to run.

“Run.”

Massimo took another step forward, casting me entirely in his shadow.

“Why aren’t you running anymore?”

His voice was low, laced with the cold of the storm night, nothing like the hot-tempered Massimo

I’d known before.

But this quiet calm was far more terrifying than his rage.

“Don Romano… I…” I parted my lips, my throat too dry to form a single coherent word.

His gaze drifted from my face down to my now clearly pregnant belly.

He gritted his teeth and lifted his hand. I flinched, squeezing my eyes shut, waiting for the blow.

But the pain never came.

Instead, his fingers brushed gently over my stomach, tentative and careful.

“How many months?” he demanded.

I froze stiff, too scared to move or answer.

“I asked you a question!” His voice rose sharply, snapping back to the fiery temper I remembered.

I jolted in fright, tears stinging my eyes. “F-four months.”

“Riley Ferraro.” He spoke my full name slowly, each word sharp with anger. “You have a death

wish.”

I thought he’d lash out and hurt me any second.

Instead, he bent down and pressed his cheek against my stomach.

His warm breath seeped through my thin shirt.

I went completely rigid.
