The next few days were unusually quiet.

Adrian didn’t come find me alone again.

I secretly felt relieved. Apparently the abused-married-mom

persona didn’t just help me dodge overtime. It also kept my ex

at a distance.

Then one rainy day, I stood on the curb forever and still

couldn’t get a ride.

A black Porsche rolled to a stop in front of me.

The window lowered.

Adrian leaned back in the driver seat, voice full of sarcasm.

“It’s raining this hard and your husband didn’t come get

you?”

“He’s busy with work,” I said casually.

“Tch. How busy could he be?” Adrian sneered. “A man who

really loves his wife would come get her even in a hailstorm.”

“Mm-hmm. Unlike you, obviously. You’re the perfect man.”

That choked him up for a second.

He frowned at me.

“Judy, with a mouth like yours, do people really manage to

bully you?”

I didn’t feel like arguing, so I opened the door and got in.

“Let’s go. South Lotus Community, West Side.”

“Who said I was taking you home?”

Still acting tough.

Even though he’d already circled this spot a few times.

And I’d long since seen the two huge boxes in the back seat.

One giant Gundam.

One full Barbie set.

“You even bought gifts for my kid, and you’re still pretending you weren’t going to drive me?”

Caught on the spot, the tips of his ears turned red.

He coughed awkwardly and looked away.

“I did the math.”

“That child is his, right?”

He looked ridiculously sure of himself.

“So you found a divorced man? Is the baggage a son or a daughter?”

“He’s mine,” I corrected him seriously. “My son.”

Then I paused and added another little stab.

“But he’s only a little over one. He can’t play with Gundam.”

Adrian’s hands tightened hard on the steering wheel.

His breathing caught.

When he spoke again, his voice was shaking.

“Judy, we only broke up two years ago… and your son is already over a year old.”

“So what you’re saying is, the second we broke up, you got with him?”

I saw the redness gathering at the corners of his eyes and curled my lips.

“Maybe I shouldn’t say more. I’m worried you’ll cry.”

He slammed on the gas.

The rest of the ride was silent.

When we got downstairs to my building, he still looked like an angry pufferfish.

Before I got out, I said:

“Let the past stay in the past.”

“I’m happy you became a big CEO.”

“Bye.”
