I stepped into a warm, sweetsmelling room. 

Flowers lingered in the air. 

I called for Jax. No one answered. 

Just I turned to leave. The bedroom door opened. 

A beautiful woman stood there. 

The moment she laid eyes on me, she froze. 

I recognized her at the very same instant. 

It was my mom, Elowen Reed. 

She was just as beautiful as she looked in her photos. 

Just as I was at a loss, Mom burst into tears. 

Then she ran to me, wrapping me in her arms. “Lila? Is that my baby?” 

Tears poured down my face. 

She told me everything that night. The system hadn’t lied. 

She’d taken the mission to save her sick mother and had 

returned to heal her. 

She’d waited for me every single day. 

“I kept a room for you,” she whispered. “Even if you hadn’t wanted to come, it would always be yours.” 

My nose stung with emotion when I heard that, I asked about my grandmother. 

“She’s in a small upstate rural town. I’ll take you to see her 

soon.” 

Grandma had fully recovered. After she got better, she went back to the rural town, and Mom had been working hard in this city all alone ever since. 

When she learned I’d stopped going to school at sixteen, she arranged for me to attend a normal high school. 

The lessons were the same as in my old world. 

I went to class each day. Mom cooked for me and we talked 

late into the night. 

The gap between us slowly closed. 

I thought life would stay this peaceful forever. 

Then Jax appeared at the door, in his human form. 

He told me he was from this world. He worked for a metaverse 

tech company. 

The four men existed inside a book world. 

That world was collapsing. He asked if I wanted to see them 

one last time. 

“Me?” I asked, shocked. 

He nodded. 

After they learned the truth, the four men had lost their minds. 

They’d locked up Elara and the thug. 

They’d made Elara suffer exactly what I had. 

Whenever she neared death, Elias saved her. He healed her just to hurt her again. 

His tone was flat, yet I could still catch a hint of malicious glee 

in his voice. 

Having lived through it all, I knew just how cruel the four 

guardians could be. 

Death wasn’t terrifying. 

Living in agony, wishing you were dead–that was true horror. 

After Elara died, they’d destroyed their world from the inside. 

The main system had contacted Jax. The four men demanded 

to see me. 

If I refused, their world would collapse completely. 

After hearing that, I thought the system would urge me to go see them. 

Instead, he said, “You don’t have to. Let the world fall. They deserve it.” 

I hesitated for a second, then told him I’d go. I just didn’t want Mom to worry. 

Before I could finish, the door flew open. 

Mom stood there, tears in her eyes. “I’m coming with you. I 

left you with them to be loved–not to be tortured.” 

The secret I’d hidden for so long had finally been found out by Mom. 

Before we went to see the guardians, she told me she’d 

suspected all along that I’d been suffering there. 

Every night in my sleep, I’d curl myself into a tight ball, murmuring in my dreams, “I’m sorry, Dads… I won’t dare 

anymore.” 

She’d just never brought it up, afraid of reopening my old 

wounds. 

Then Jax took us to them. 

The smell of alcohol and smoke hit me as soon as we opened 

the door. 

The four men sat on the sofa, hollow with grief. 

They looked up at once. 

“Lila,” they whispered in unison. 

They stood up together and rushed toward me. 

Before they could touch me, Mom stepped in front. 

When they got a clear look at the person in front of them, they 

lit up with joy. 

“Elowen, you’re back!”
