I thought I was going to Mom. 

Then the system appeared. 

It said there was a small error. I had to wait a little longer. 

I nodded. 

I’d waited years. A few more days meant nothing. 

I watched them from my spirit form. 

When Kael realized I was gone, he collapsed. 

He shook me, his voice breaking. “Lila, stop pretending. Wake 

up.” 

The others stared in shock. 

Elias, the doctor, dropped to his knees and felt my pulse. 

His face went gray. 

“Call 911!” he screamed. 

He ripped open my shirt and started CPR. 

Silas stared, dumbfounded. “She’s faking, right?” 

Jude was the only one calm enough to dial emergency services. 

The ambulance arrived quickly. The best doctors worked on me for three hours. 

The monitor stayed flat. 

Everyone gave up but Elias. 

“You don’t get to die!” he shouted, pressing down on my chest. “You haven’t paid for what you did!” 

“I’ll put you back in the kennel if you don’t wake up!” 

No one dared stop him. 

At last, the hospital director pulled him away. 

“Get off me!” Elias shoved him away violently. “If you won’t save her, I will. She’s not dead. She didn’t die before, and she’s not dying now.” 

He continued pumping my chest like a man possessed. 

“Dr. Reed, let her go!” he could bear it no longer. “It’s been three hours. You’ve broken her ribs. She couldn’t survive this 

even if she was alive!” 

Elias finally stilled. 

He looked at my body–pale, lips blue, cuts and bruises covering my skin, my chest dented from his compressions. 

He realized he hadn’t really seen me in years. 

The soft, small girl he’d held as a baby. The child who’d loved him unconditionally. 

Somehow, I’d become thin and broken, starved and silent. 

Sorrow crashed over him. 

He fell to the floor and cried. 

The doctors left quietly. 

Minutes later, the other three men rushed in. 

“How is she?” Jude demanded. 

Elias didn’t answer. They saw the white sheet covering me. 

Kael staggered back. He punched Silas hard in the face. 

“This is your fault!” he screamed. “You ordered them to hurt her! You killed her!” 

Silas snapped. “You told us to finish her! Don’t act innocent!” 

They quickly started fighting. 

Everyone watching knew they fought not out of anger, but 

grief. 

Jude pulled them apart. 

“Enough! We’re all guilty. But none of this would have happened if she hadn’t hurt Elara.” 

Elias nodded through his pain. 

“She brought this on herself. She probably died just to make 

us feel guilty. Don’t fall for it. Today is Elara’s eighteenth birthday. We’re going to celebrate.” 

The mention of Elara calmed them. 

Their phones rang. 

It was Elara, crying. 

“Dad, I- I was hurt by Lila again.”
