I didn’t care who was watching anymore; I raised my hand to strike her.

Yvette threw her arms up to shield her face, cowering like I was a monster.

“Please don’t hit me, Vera! I’m not hurting your mother, why are you lying about me?”

But the frantic vibrations from my watch were driving me insane; my mother was in mortal danger.

I tried to step forward again, but Victor stepped between us, his eyes full of disgust.

“Vera, enough! Yvette never even blamed your mother for killing hers, and you have the nerve to accuse her?”

My whole body shook like a leaf. “My mother is in danger.”

“Stop it! Hasn’t Yvette suffered enough at your hands? Look at yourself. You don’t act like a bride at all.”

Right then, where Victor couldn’t see, Yvette showed me her phone, the surveillance footage.

In the mental hospital, my mother was locked in a metal cage, flames spreading toward her from all sides.

The fire crept closer inch by inch. The horror on my mother’s face was like a knife twisting in my heart.

I shoved Victor aside and lunged for Yvette.

The next second, Victor seized my wrist and hurled me down the steps.

“Vera, I’ve done everything I could for you. But you keep pushing. Apologize to Yvette right now, or you’re not going anywhere.”

I tumbled down five steps, my whole body feeling like it had been shattered.

Victor started toward me to help, but I shoved him away.

The image of my mother burning alive, begging for mercy, made me drop all my pride for the first time in my life.

“Yvette, I’m sorry. My mother and I are sorry.”

I looked up at Yvette’s smug face with pure hatred, then at Victor.

His expression was unreadable. “Good attitude. Get up.”

He reached for me, but I flinched away in disgust and ran out of the party.

Victor frowned, watching me go. His chest tightened.

“Victor,” Yvette called sweetly. “Sing happy birthday to me.”

“Yeah.”

When I got to the mental hospital, the fire had just reached my mother’s cage.

I ran in like a madwoman and tried to unlock it. My hands sizzled against the scorching metal.

Then a piece of medical equipment in the corner exploded. A wave of heat slammed into me.

That night, Yvette posted a wedding photo. It shot straight to the top of trending searches.

[Turns out Vera was the mistress all along.]

[What a joke. Her mother threw a fit about the other woman, and her own daughter is the homewrecker.]

Victor actually texted me to explain:

[Yvette’s really unstable right now. I only agreed to a temporary mate bond to keep her calm. But you’re still my bride.]

[They brought your wedding dress back. Come home and try it on.]

I didn’t have the strength to reply. Everything went dark.

The next day at the mating ceremony, Victor stood in his perfectly pressed tuxedo, waiting eagerly for his bride.

The crowd applauded as the doors opened, and Yvette walked in.

The smile vanished from Victor’s face. He stormed toward her, eyes blazing.
