I frowned, disgust twisting in my chest. How had he even gotten in? Thorne estate security was usually tight. 

I denied it coldly. “No.” 

But Vincent didn’t believe me. He smiled smugly. “Evelyn, stop pretending.” 

“Didn’t I come to apologize? Look, I fixed the necklace. It’s good as new. No more fighting, no more talk about Isabella. We’ll be fine, alright?” 

“You were just upset the other day when you said the engagement was off. But look, you’ve already prepared the wedding gifts. You must still care about me, right?” 

I almost laughed. How could anyone be this shameless? Even now, he still thought I was just playing hard to get. 

He walked right into the villa and started rummaging through the things I’d left in the living room. “Mom will be so happy to hear you’re not angry anymore.” 

“Come on, you’ll come back to the Costa estate with me and apologize to her. Let her see the gift list so she can relax.” 

“You’ve got quite a long gift list. You’re really doing our family proud.” 

I gave him a look of pure disgust. Even now, he was still trying to control my things, expecting me to apologize? 

I spoke slowly and clearly, enunciating every word. “Mr. Costa, let me remind you one more time. Our engagement is 

over. Completely. Irrevocably.” 

“If you have nothing else to do, please leave. Stop wasting my time, or I won’t be so polite next time.” 

Vincent, of course, ignored me. He shoved the repaired diamond necklace into my hands. 

“Evelyn, stop being dramatic. I know you’re still mad. But I apologized. What more do you want from me?” 

I took the necklace, didn’t even look at it, and ripped it apart 

again. 

Vincent was furious. “Evelyn! I went through so much trouble to have that fixed by the best jeweler! Don’t be so ungrateful!” 

I raised an eyebrow and smiled slightly. I didn’t say anything, but my look said it all: What are you going to do about it? Go 

ahead. Try something. 

My expression set him off. His voice dripped with threats. “Evelyn, if you keep this up, don’t blame me for playing 

rough.” 

“I’ll team up with the other mafia families and sue you for breach of trust. I’ll make sure the Thorne family can never 

hold their head up in the underworld again.” 

“Oh, you haven’t heard?” I walked to the sofa and sat down. “My father officially announced the end of our engagement.” 

“The family council had our alliance reviewed. They found it ill–advised; it would bring more conflict than benefit to both 

families.” 

“What?” Vincent’s face went white. The only leverage he’d had 

over me was the engagement itself, the Thorne family’s honor. And now that was gone. 

“Our charts were supposed to be perfectly compatible. You’re lying! Evelyn, you have to be lying!” 

I reminded him calmly, “My father is the head of the Thorne family. The most powerful mafia boss there is. If he says our 

alliance is void, it’s void.” 

“There’s nothing the Thorne family can’t do, and no reason 

we can’t find.”
