He Called Me His Mother’s Killer And Tried To Transfer Me To His Friend Chapter 09

-Ethan spoke first, “Mom, can you tell the prosecutor you’re not pressing charges? He’s still our dad.”

“I don’t want him to go to prison,”

Noah quickly chimed in. “If Dad gets convicted and sent to prison, kids at school will make fun of us.”

“You can leave because you and Dad are divorced, but Ethan and I still have to live with him.”

The way they looked at me, they still blamed me for the divorce.

I was too disappointed to be angry anymore. Their words just hurt.

“Your dad cheated on me–you weren’t embarrassed.”

“He tried to hand me over to another man like some piece of property–you weren’t embarrassed either.”

“He used my credit card to buy that woman a whole set of jewelry–still not embarrassed.”

“But the one time I stand up for my rights, you’re ashamed of me?”

Both boys looked down.

Ethan muttered, “Lots of men cheat. It’s not that big a deal.”

“Plenty of women put up with it.”

I let out a bitter laugh.

“So because I wouldn’t put up with it, you blame me.”

Neither boy answered.

I went on, “Your dad was so caught up with that woman that he sent you back to Cedar Falls to go to

school.”

“He even planned to give her our house and bring her son here to raise.”

“He already shipped you off to Cedar Falls, and he never once thought about what was best for you.”

“And here you are, still defending him.”

“If that’s what you want, fine. I’m done.”

“I carried you both for nine months. You haven’t spared a thought for me, so I don’t have to put your

feelings first anymore.”

Noah panicked. Tears welled up as he grabbed my hand.

“Mom, please don’t give up on us.”

“It was Auntie and the relatives. They said lots of men cheat and it’s no big deal.”

“They said Grandpa fooled around too, and Grandma put up with it her whole life.”

“We just didn’t want our family to fall apart. I didn’t know Dad was sending us to Cedar Falls because of

some woman.”

“Dad told us you were the one insisting on the divorce. He said he had to work and didn’t have time to look

after us, so sending us back was his only option.”

Ethan started crying, too. He took my other hand.

“Dad never told us he was going to marry that woman.”

“Mom, I’m sorry. I got it wrong. I shouldn’t have said those things,”

My heart ached.

They were still the sons I’d carried for nine months. I couldn’t just abandon them.

“I’ve remarried. You know him–it’s Caleb.”

“Now, you have two choices.”

“You can come back to Maple Grove and go to school here. I’ll support you.”

“If you’d rather stay in Cedar Falls, you can live with Grandpa and go to school there. I’ll send money for

your living expenses.”

“As for your father’s case, the law has to take its course.”

“I never did anything wrong to him or his family. Not once.”

“So even if you two ask me to drop the charges, I won’t let this go.”

“I hope you understand. But even if you don’t, my decision won’t change.”

Both boys stared at me in shock.

They hadn’t expected me to marry Caleb.

They’d always gotten along well with him. They also remembered how he’d taken them to the clinic when

they were little and sick.

So neither of them objected to my marriage.

Both boys wanted to return to Maple Grove for school.

Walter didn’t have the nerve to ask me to spare Grant anymore. He just stood there, weeping.

arranged for the boys to return to Maple Grove and enroll in school there.

They’d stay in their eld home

Walter was afraid Tessa might try to take the house, so he stayed in town instead of going back to Cedar

Falls–to cook for the boys.

I gave them $3,000 a month in child support.

That was enough to cover their everyday expenses.
