He Called Me His Mother’s Killer And Tried To Transfer Me To His Friend Chapter 02

The next day, Grant and I went to the county clerk’s office to file our divorce papers.

A relative of Grant’s happened to be working at the office that day. She stared at us in disbelief.

“You two always seemed so happy!”

“How did things get this bad? Why rush into it?”

To our friends and relatives, Grant and I had a modest but peaceful home. We rarely fought, and things seemed stable enough.

If I hadn’t overheard his talking with his friend, I never would’ve known he’d hated me for fourteen years.

I’d never known he blamed me for his mother’s death, either.

But he forgot one thing. Even if that $80,000 cash gift had nearly wiped out his family, I brought every dollar back and used it for his father’s surgery.

And even if he’d never married me, his mother still would’ve had to work. She still could’ve worked herself to death.

For years, friends and family praised him for marrying a sensible, hardworking wife who knew how to stretch a dollar.

Every time, he’d smile faintly.

Only now did I get it. That smile was bitter—a mask for all the resentment he’d been carrying.

Grant turned to his relative.

“We’ve made our decision, and we’ve already talked it through.”

“Don’t bother trying to talk us out of it.”

His relative sighed helplessly.

“Good thing there’s still a few days before it’s final.”

“Take some time to cool off and think things through.”

Grant clearly had no patience for the lecture. He couldn’t wait to leave.

That night he came home reeking of another woman’s perfume. And there was a hickey on his neck.

He didn’t seem to notice the tension. He just looked at me, surprised, like he was wondering why I was still there.

Ethan spoke first, face hard. “I don’t agree to this divorce.”

“Dad, don’t take this too far!”

Noah acted like this was all perfectly normal and tried to talk me out of it.

“Dad just made the mistake every man makes.”

“Mom, you’re almost thirty-seven! Why are you still making such a big deal out of this?”

Grant snapped at me. “We’re getting divorced because we’re incompatible. There’s no love left.”

“What have you been telling them?”

I kept my face blank.

“I didn’t tell them about the divorce. They heard it from your relative.”

“And I didn’t tell them why, either. Ethan saw the pictures of you and Tessa on your computer.”

That was when my heart went cold.

I thought once the boys learned the truth, they’d turn on their father and stand up for me.

Instead, they were both blaming me for wanting a divorce over something so trivial.

I’d heard coworkers say some sons just can’t empathize with their mothers. I always believed not every son was like that.

When it happened to me, I finally got how much those words could cut.

I’d still felt reluctant to leave the boys. I’d even considered fighting for custody.

But not anymore.

I was done with all three of them—same blood and all.

Grant put on a casual look and tried to brush it off.

“Those pictures were taken out of context. You’re reading too much into them.”

“This is grown-up stuff. Stay out of it!”

The boys pushed back for a few days, but eventually they let it go.

I moved out and rented a place near work.

That evening, my company held a dinner. By sheer coincidence, I spotted Grant and Tessa in a private room next door.

I overheard him making promises to her.

“Don’t worry. I’ll send both boys back to Cedar Falls for school.”

“If you’re worried about your son, bring him here. He can live with us.”

“From now on, the three of us can finally have a good life. I’ve owed you so much all these years.”

“I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”

I was calmer than I expected.

I just found it laughable.

He wouldn’t raise his own sons, but he was all set to raise someone else’s.
