She Wanted My Body for Three Days? Fine, She Can Keep It Forever! Chapter 09

Before I knew it, New Year’s Eve had arrived. Ethan and I had started talking regularly again.

The Whitmores suggested inviting him to dinner with the family. During the meal, the

conversation turned to “Nora.”

“I remember her being such a nice girl,” Mrs. Whitmore said sadly. “What happened to hershe

nearly hurt our Chloe.”

Ethan and I exchanged a glance. We were the only ones at the table who knew the truth, and we kept

it to ourselves.

“Yeah,” Ryan said. “She never used to act like that. It’s like she became a completely different

person.”

“Let’s not spoil the evening talking about someone else,” Mr. Whitmore said. “What matters is that Chloe’s doing so well.”

He raised his glass, and we clinked ours against his in a toast to being together as a family.

After dinner, we decided to walk instead of drive, soaking up the holiday atmosphere.

Then we heard shouting up ahead.

As we got closer, we saw someone on a rooftop, threatening to jump.

I was about to turn away. I didn’t want to spend New Year’s Eve watching something so awful..

“If you don’t let me go, I’ll jump!”

That familiar voice stopped me cold.

It was Chloe. She stood on the roof facing my parents, Evan, and an elderly man.

Even after her threat, they kept advancing.

“Why are you making a scene on New Year’s Eve? Go home with your husband!”

My father reached for her arm, but she shoved him away hard enough to make him stumble.

“Get away from me! All of you! I finally escaped, and you’re not dragging me back!”

My mother stepped forward and started yelling.

“You think you can do whatever you want now, you little bitch? You could’ve had a comfortable life with Mr. Wallace, but you had to run off and work in a factory!”

Chloe’s voice grew more desperate.

“Bullshit! You sold me to an old man, and now you’re pretending you did me a favor! He’s been torturing me! Do you even know that?”

Growing impatient, my father reached for her again.

“Every married couple has problems. Stop making a fuss! Who do you think you are, some spoiled

heiress?”

“No! I’m not going back!”

She backed away as she spoke, her feet nearing the edge. Her eyes darted around in panic.

Then she spotted me.

I smiled and gave her a little wave.

Her face twisted with rage.

“You! Give me my body back!”

She tried to push past them and come down after me, but her foot caught on a step.

She might have recovered her balance if her leg hadn’t been injured.

She screamed.

Then came a heavy thud.

Chloe was dead.

That one misstep ended all her schemes and resentment.

Someone had already called the police, but help hadn’t arrived in time to save her. The officers took everyone from the rooftop to the station for questioning.

None of that concerned me. I was just a frightened passerby who’d witnessed something terrible.

My only connection was that this was the rooftop where I’d died in my previous life.

I’d tripped on the same step.

The difference was that I hadn’t been injured. I’d simply had nothing left to live for, so I hadn’t tried

to save myself.

Once we got home, I contacted the investigator to find out what had happened to Chloe.

After hearing his account, I could only conclude that she’d brought it on herself.

After she’d been handed over to the old man, the lenders holding her nude photos as collateral tracked her down. They demanded repayment from him, along with exorbitant interest.

He had money and didn’t want trouble, so he paid.

Chloe, however, paid for it in another way.

At first, he’d still been interested in her. He’d even shown some concern for her broken leg and planned to wait until she recovered before taking things further.

But when he learned about the photos she’d given the lenders, he flew into a rage. My parents had told him she was a respectable girl, and he felt they’d deceived him. He locked her in a room while he demanded an explanation from them.

Chloe escaped through a window again, taking her phone with her.

The window was low enough that she managed to get away this time.

Without her ID and too afraid to contact anyone for help, she struggled to find legitimate work.

But the old man sent people to track her down. When they found her, she ran until she reached that rooftop.

I shook my head and stopped dwelling on it.

She’d done this to herself. If she hadn’t contacted my parents, taken out those loans, handed over all my money, or gotten herself fired, she wouldn’t have ended

up

there.

I had someone post everything that had happened to her online. As the outrage grew, more people paid attention.

My family wasn’t going to walk away from this without facing the consequences.
