The Princess Who Left the Alpha Family Chapter 04

“Veyra! The exit’s that way.”

Mom moved to follow. Dad held her back.

“Leave her. Calyra’s ceremony comes first.”

They all circled Calyra. Soothing. Comforting.

No one noticed I’d taken the elevator up.

The rooftop.

One more step and I could go home.

I just had to time it. The exact moment. That was the key.

Someone below saw me. Called the cops.

Sirens. They came fast. Airbag deployed on the pavement.

The ceremony ended. The Nightwind Pack flooded outside with their guests.

That’s when they saw the crowd looking up.

Lucien spat. “Who the hell picks today of all days to jump off my family’s hotel?”

“It’s Miss Veyra.”

All the color drained from their faces.

Kellan snorted. “Veyra? Please. It’s a stunt. If she actually jumps, I’ll eat shit right here on the sidewalk.”

Calyra collapsed against him. “Why won’t she let me breathe? Why does she want me dead? Maybe I shouldn’t have come back. Maybe I don’t deserve to live.”

Kellan wrapped his arms around her. “Mom, Dad. Send Veyra away. Calyra will never be okay with her around.”

Dad nodded. Grim.

“Tell the cops to move the airbag. Veyra’s bluffing. She’s just feeding her drama addiction.”

Lucien walked over to the officers. “Officers? You can pack it up. My sister’s just acting out. She won’t jump.”

“If we remove the safety equipment, we can’t guarantee…”

“You won’t be liable. Trust me. Veyra loves herself too much.”

The cops folded the airbag.

I almost laughed from the ledge. That bag was the only thing that might have saved me.

Kellan stepped forward with Calyra. He looked up. Mouth open to yell at me.

Then I dropped.

A stone. Straight down.

I hit the ground right in front of the Nightwind Pack. Right in front of Kellan.

The sound was wet. Heavy.

Blood sprayed. Hot. All over their faces.

Silence.

I landed face-first. Body twisted like a broken doll.

Mom fainted dead away.

Dad’s voice shook. “Is that… is that Veyra?”

Lucien shook his head over and over. “No. No way. She’d never. It’s a stunt double. She’s hiding somewhere laughing at us.”

Kellan covered Calyra’s eyes. “She’s sick. This whole thing was to mess with Calyra’s head.”

“Veyra! Get the hell out here! You think hiding’s gonna save you? I’ll find you. I swear to god, I’ll make you regret this.”

His eyes swept the crowd. Desperate.

I wasn’t there.

Panic hit him.

Calyra clutched his arm. “Kellan. I can’t breathe. Get me out of here.”

Classic. A crisis.

Everyone swarmed Calyra again.

She tipped backward. Dramatic faint. Perfect timing. Everyone scrambled.

Paramedics arrived. For me.

They bent to lift my body.

Kellan grabbed the medic. “My mate first!”

He made them drop my stretcher. Made them load Calyra instead.

The whole Nightwind Pack trailed the ambulance to the hospital.

I lay on the pavement.

A stranger called another ambulance. That’s the only reason I made it to the morgue.

At the hospital, Calyra got a full workup.

Nothing. She was fine.

Finally, they remembered I existed.

Lucien dialed. “Where the hell is Veyra? Mom and Calyra are in the hospital because of her little stunt, and she’s ghosting us?”

Kellan fired off texts. [I’m giving you thirty minutes. Show up, or you’ll never see me again.]

[Hospital. Now. Make it in thirty, and I’ll take your call. Once a week.]

Message after message.

I answered none of them.

Lucien’s calls went straight to nothing.

“Wait. Her phone. She was wearing her wedding gown when she showed up. It’s probably still at the house. That’s why she’s not answering.”

“Let’s go home. She’s probably sitting there waiting for us.”
