My Best Friend Changed Boyfriends Weekly… Until She Chose My Ten-Year Fiancé Chapter 06

A few hours by plane, and I landed in the city of my new assignment.

The moment I turned my phone on, messages flooded in.

[Lindsay, where are you? Weren’t we getting the license today?]

[Did you cancel the appointment?]

[If you keep this up, I really won’t marry you.]

[You just want me to beg, don’t you? Fine, I’ll be there on time tomorrow. Happy?]

Damon sent a screenshot – a license appointment for tomorrow morning.

I didn’t reply. I put my phone on Do Not Disturb and slept straight through until noon the next day.

When I woke up, there were dozens of missed calls.

Another call came in. It was my mother’s number.

The moment I picked up, Damon’s voice came through.

His tone was nasty. “Lindsay, where are you? Are you messing with me?”

I said, “I never said I’d go.”

He paused for two seconds.

“What do you mean?”

“Weren’t you the one who said we weren’t getting the license?”

“That was just me being mad.”

“But I was serious.”

Chloe’s voice cut in, thick with tears.

“Lindsay, are you still angry with me? I’ve given Damon back to you. Isn’t that enough?”

I let out a laugh.

“How exactly did you give him back? By posting another call for a new boyfriend?”

“I…” Chloe sounded like she was about to cry. “Lindsay, I can make a post. If it’ll make you happy.”

She hesitated for several seconds. Damon didn’t say a word to stop her.

“Lindsay, I posted it. Is that okay now?”

I sighed. “No. I find it disgusting.”

“Lindsay, haven’t you caused enough trouble?” Damon’s voice trembled slightly. “What exactly do you want?”

I said, “Damon, what I’m saying is we’re not getting the license. We’re done.”

“Go chase whatever newness you want. I don’t care.”

His voice was full of disbelief.

“Lindsay, are you serious? Ten years together, and you’re ending it just like that?”

My mother’s scolding voice came through.

“Lindsay, what nonsense are you talking?”

“You and Damon are getting married any day now. Picking a fight and saying cruel things at a time like this –

you’ll regret it.”

“Yeah, we really were about to get married.” My voice was very soft. “He could’ve just kept hiding it from me.”

The company apartment sat in a building packed with people. Doors kept opening and closing, and the

vibration made my suitcase slide a little by the door.

My eyes landed on it.

It was covered with more than a dozen airline luggage stickers from the trips Damon and I had taken over

the past ten years.

I picked up a pair of scissors and walked over.

“But he didn’t.”

I said, “He thought I could take it. That I wouldn’t be able to let go.”

I snipped the stickers off one by one.

Damon’s voice turned tense. “Lindsay, I didn’t… I just… I just…”

I finished the sentence he couldn’t say.

“You just thought I couldn’t live without you.”

“So to spare her feelings, you slept with her right in front of me, out in the open.”

“You did every couple thing with her, and even the wedding gown was in her size.”

His voice tightened. “Lindsay, don’t be like this. Can’t we just talk this out properly?”

My mother chimed in. “That’s right, Lindsay. Sit down and talk it through.”

“You’ve been together so long. What a waste to throw it away.”

I smiled.

“Mom, it’s not a waste. Don’t you already have another daughter?”

“Didn’t you say, ‘If only they were my daughter and son-in-law’?”

“I’m giving them what they want. Shouldn’t you be happy?”

She sputtered for a long time without getting a word out.

Damon countered, “Lindsay, I never agreed to break up.”

“What I’m saying is, you can’t just throw away ten years of us like this.”

The last sticker was finally off the suitcase.

I crumpled them all into a ball and tossed them in the trash.

“You’re the one who gave up first. I just said it out loud.”
