He Gave His Assistant My Promotion, So I Left Him Forever Chapter 07

It took Adrian less than a day to find out where I’d gone.

He booked the first flight out, threw a bag together, slipped the ring into his pocket, and left

for the airport.

Nothing else mattered.

Six hours later, he touched down on the opposite coast.

He didn’t stop, didn’t look around. He took a cab straight to Westhaven University.

By then, I’d already enrolled and settled into my apartment.

Small apartment. Two bedrooms. Clean enough.

My roommate was local, outgoing, and completely unfazed by my corporate past. If anything, she seemed impressed.

“Sullivan, seriously? You walked away from a senior corporate track just to come back to grad school? That’s badass.”

I smiled.

“Just finishing something I started a long time ago.”

The corporate world had ground the naivety out of me. What it left behind was steadier.

I fit in easily. No need to prove anything, no need to shrink.

I showed up, paid attention, and spoke up when I had something to say.

Years of real-world experience gave me an edge in class. I picked things up fast, and my professors noticed. The younger students didn’t treat me like an outsider. They came to me with questions, and we fell into an easy rhythm.

No one here needed me to hide. No relationship to perform around. No eggshells.

For the first time in years, I was just living. And it felt like breathing after being underwater.

Three days into the semester.

Afternoon light poured through the café windows.

I’d finished my morning lectures and settled in with a coffee and my textbook.

A shadow fell across my table. I knew who it was before I looked up.

Adrian.

He sat down across from me like the chair might disappear if he didn’t. His eyes searched my

face, desperate and lost.

I looked the same. But something was different and he could feel it.

Same face. Same features. But the need was gone from my eyes. All he found there now was a quiet he’d never seen before.

That calm terrified him more than anger ever could.

“What are you doing here, Adrian?”

My voice was flat. Polite. Like he was a stranger asking for directions.

Adrian’s throat locked. He had a thousand things to say and no idea how to start.

The words came out rough.

“Elena, I’m sorry. I know I screwed up. I know.”

“I spent years thinking about my career and my reputation and I forgot to think about you. All those times you were hurting, that was on me.”

His voice cracked on the last word.

“Come home. Please. We’ll start over. No more hiding, no more distance.”

“I’ll tell everyone. I’ll spend every day making up for what I did. I’ll keep every promise I broke.”

He set the velvet box on the table, flipped it open, and slid it toward me.

The ring inside was simple, classic. The kind we’d described to each other under the stars back home, eighteen years old and sure about everything.

“Marry me, Elena.”

“I love you. I’ve never loved anyone else.”

I glanced at the ring. Nothing moved inside me.

It could have been a pebble.

I closed the box and met his eyes.

“Do you remember what we promised each other at eighteen?”

He nodded fast, almost before I’d finished.

“Grad school together. Build a life in Riverton. Get married. Grow old. All of it.”

“Yeah.”

I smiled, and even I could feel how sad it was.

“We had nothing back then. No money, no plan, no safety net. And we were so happy. We thought love was enough to get through anything.”

“What we felt was real. Reckless and total and completely unguarded.”

I paused.

“If I were still that eighteen-year-old girl, I’d take this ring and fall right back into questions. No conditions.”

“Even if it wrecked me, I would’ve said yes and meant it

you. No

“Because back then, you were more important to me than I was. I would’ve given up anything. I did give up everything.”

“But I’m not that girl anymore.”

I kept my voice even. He deserved that much.

“Ten years changes a person. It also opens your eyes.”

“Whatever we had, time ground it down. You used up every ounce of patience and hope I had left.”

Adrian leaned forward. Panic bleeding through his voice.

“I’ll be different, Elena. I swear. Just give the one more chance. That’s all I’m asking.”

I shook my head.

“This isn’t about whether you can change. We passed the point of no return a long time ago.”

“Everything you called protection? The distance, the rules, the secrecy? That was never about me. It was about you.”

“Your reputation. Your career. Your image. That’s what you were protecting. Not me.”

“I gave you everything, Adrian. My dreams, my career, ten years of swallowing every hurt. I kept telling myself if I just held on long enough, you’d turn around and see me.”

“But the moment I stopped waiting for you, my life got better. Just like that.”

“I have my own goals now. My own pace. I wake up and the first thing I feel isn’t dread.”

“And honestly? It feels amazing.”

I looked at him, and I meant every word.

“I’ve let go, Adrian. And I don’t want to pick it back up.”

“Those ten years were a chapter. A long one. But it’s over now. We go forward. Separately.”

Adrian searched my face for something to hold on to. There was nothing there.

She wasn’t angry. She wasn’t bargaining. She was finished.

He opened his mouth. One more argument. One more plea. Anything.

But the look in my eyes shut him down before a single word came out.
