He Gave His Assistant My Promotion, So I Left Him Forever Chapter 06

Adrian drove like the road was running out. His knuckles were white on the steering wheel, and

his pulse was a drumbeat in his ears.

He kept telling himself there was an explanation.

She was still home. She was just upset. That was all.

But when he threw open the front door, the apartment answered with silence.

Every trace of me was gone.

The shoe rack by the door. Empty on my side.

The bedroom closet. Bare hangers.

Clothes, jewelry, skincare. All of it. Cleared out.

The apartment looked like I’d never existed in it.

Adrian stood in the middle of the living room, turning slowly, like he was waiting for something to prove him wrong.

His eyes landed on the coffee table.

My resignation confirmation, sitting right there in the open.

Dated two days ago.

Two days. I’d put it there and waited for him. Wanted to sit down and say it face to face.

And what had he done?

Ran out the door because Camille called.

Brought Camille home for soup and didn’t notice the look on my face.

Drove Camille home. Handled work. Guarded his precious reputation.

Two days, and he never once looked at the coffee table.

Never once noticed that I was already gone before I left.

He’d been looking past me for years.

He just didn’t realize that every time he looked away, I was taking one more step toward the door. Until there was nothing left to hold me.

The panic hit all at once/ A wave so heavy it took out his knees.

He crumpled the resignation paper in his fist.

Losing me had never been a possibility in his mind.

I’d always be there. That was the assumption he’d never bothered to question.

He was wrong.

He was so wrong it was almost funny.

He sank into the sofa and stared at nothing. And the memories came, uninvited.

Freshman year. My face bright and open, grinning at him. “Looks like you’re stuck with me,

Adrian.”

Grad school. Me wiring him half my paycheck, living on ramen so he didn’t have to. “Don’t worry about money. Just focus on school. I’ve got us.”

That tiny restaurant on our old street. One bowl of soup between us. He’d watch me eat his share and promise himself, silently, that he’d spend his whole life making it up to me.

His first promotion. My arms around his neck, laughing like it was my win too. “I’m so proud

of you.”

All those times I’d been hurt and said nothing. Just looked at him with that quiet

disappointment, never once raising my voice…

Every memory sharp enough to draw blood.

He’d broken every promise he ever made.

Love her forever. Make it up to her. Never let her down.

He’d done the opposite of all of it.

No one had hurt me more than him. And no one had less of an excuse.

He grabbed his phone and called me. Hands shaking.

The line clicked. His breath caught. He waited for

my voice.

Even if I was furious. Even if I said nothing. Just hearing me breathe would’ve been enough.

The recording kicked in before the first ring finished.

[The person you are calling cannot be reached at the moment.]

He tried again.

Same message.

He called fifteen times. Twenty. The answer never changed.

She’d blocked him.

Before she’d even boarded the plane, she’d erased him.

Adrian slumped against the couch. The silence in the apartment pressed down on him like deep

water.

After a long time, his hand went to his pocket. He pulled out a small velvet box.

Inside, a diamond ring. Simple. Perfect.

The stone wasn’t big, but it caught the light and threw it back in fragments, the same way

everything inside him was breaking apart.

He’d been carrying it for weeks.

The plan was simple. The day she made director, he’d get down on one knee and finally keep the promise he’d made ten years ago.

He loved her. He wanted to marry her. None of that had ever been a lie.

He just never thought love alone wouldn’t be enough.

Everything he’d destroyed, he’d done himself, Every wall he’d built between them, brick by brick, with his own careful, principled hands.

He closed his fist around the ring until the edges bit into his palm. When his voice came, it was

barely there.

“Elena… I messed up. God, I messed up so bad. Come back. Please come back…”

The words dissolved into the empty apartment. No one heard them. No one was coming back.
