He Gave His Assistant My Promotion, So I Left Him Forever Chapter 08

Adrian stayed for a month.

He rented a place near campus and showed up wherever I was.

Class. He waited outside the door.

Library. He sat a few tables away.

Meals with classmates. He’d be at a table across the room, close enough to see me, far enough not to intrudé.

He didn’t push. Didn’t approach. He just existed in my orbif, steady and silent.

He watched me settle in. Watched me laugh more easily, stand a little taller, stop checking over my shoulder.

And somewhere in that month, it hit him. I wasn’t missing him. I wasn’t struggling. I was fine.

It was time to go.

He didn’t say goodbye. He booked a flight home and left the way he’d come. Quietly.

Back home, the exhaustion hit like a wall. He went to the office anyway.

He knew something was wrong the second he walked in.

The office felt off. People avoided eye contact. Conversations died when he passed.

His flagship projects were gone. Reassigned. And the partner companies had started pulling out, one after another.

He barely made it to his desk before his new assistant barged in, ashen.

“It’s Camille. She took your projects to a competitor. All of them. She stole our proprietary data

too.”

“We’ve lost every major partnership tied to those accounts. The damage is massive.”

Adrian went very still.

“Camille.”

He was out the door.

He found her at the same café. The one across the street,

He didn’t sit down.

“I gave you everything, Projects, promotions, protection. And this is what you do?”

Camille didn’t flinch. The softness he was used to seeing was nowhere.

“Did you actually think any of that was about me?”

Adrian had no comeback.

Had he helped Camille because she was talented? Maybe. Partly.

But mostly because it made him look good. Fair. Principled. The boss who didn’t play favorites.

Camille’s mouth twisted.

“You didn’t help me out of kindness. You helped me because it served you.”

“And what, I’m not allowed to play the same game? Only men get to be ambitious?”

“You built your whole career on Elena’s back. She gave up everything so you could climb.”

“I used you. Now I’m using someone better. Tell me how that’s any different from what you did to her.”

Adrian didn’t answer. He couldn’t.

Because she was right.

The realization didn’t hit all at once. It seeped in, cold and total.

He’d wrecked us.

And his blind spots had let Camille walk a bomb right through the front door.

The board moved fast. Adrian was stripped of his title and demoted to department manager.

Without the title, something in him went quiet. Not broken. Clear.

The regret was still there, but he stopped drowning in it.

His career had never been his alone. I’d built the foundation under it with ten years of my life.

He couldn’t waste that. Not anymore.

Even if I never came back, he owed it to the version of me who’d believed in him to become

someone worth that belief.

He changed. Not overnight, but unmistakably.

The posturing stopped. The image management. All of it.

He put his head down and worked. Treated every project like it mattered and every person on his team the same. No favorites. No politics.

Slowly, the numbers recovered. The partners came back. His coworkers stopped whispering when he walked by.

Some nights, he’d scroll through my feed.

I didn’t post much. A lecture hall. A sunset from the library. Coffee with friends.

In every photo, I looked settled. Steady. Happy in a way that had nothing to do with him.

Once, he flew out just to see me. Didn’t tell anyone. Sat on a bench across from campus and watched me walk to class.

He never approached. Just watched until I disappeared inside, then went back to the airport.

Some debts don’t have a payment plan. He knew that now. The best he could do was hope, from whatever distance I needed, that I kept thriving.
