At dinner, Lily personally brought me a glass of warm milk.

“I’m sorry, Natalie. The doctor said milk would help you relax. You’re getting married tomorrow, so you need a good night’s sleep.”

Mom patted her hand approvingly. “Lily is trying so hard. You should say something too.”

I didn’t reach for the glass. “What am I supposed to say?”

Mom frowned. “That you forgive her, obviously. She already feels terrible for hurting you during an episode. Do you expect her to get on her knees in front of everyone?”

Lily’s eyes reddened, and she actually started to kneel.

Ethan caught her at once and rounded on me.

“Natalie Bennett, you’ve gone too far!”

“Did I ask her to kneel?”

I picked up the milk and held it to Lily’s lips.

“Since you made it with so much love, why don’t you take the first sip?”

All the color drained from her face. She shoved the glass away, spilling milk across the table.

Half of an undissolved pill clung to the bottom of the glass.

Ethan picked it up and sniffed it.

“A sleeping pill?”

Lily burst into tears. “I only wanted Natalie to sleep well. The doctor prescribed it for me. I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to put it in milk.”

“That was reckless!” Dad snapped,

For one hopeful second, I thought he meant to hold her accountable.

Instead, he turned to the staff.

“Clean the table. No one is to mention this outside this room.”

I stared at him. “She drugged my drink, and that’s it?”

“Don’t be dramatic,” Dad said in a low voice. “It was one sleeping pill. Guests and reporters

will be here tomorrow. Do you really have to throw this family into chaos the night before your wedding?”

Lily clutched Mom’s sleeve. “I’m scared, Mom. Why does Natalie always assume the worst of

me?”

Mom pulled her close. “Because she’s about to marry into the Hayes family, and now she

thinks she’s too good for her own sister.”

Ethan tossed the pill into the trash. “Lily explained herself. You didn’t drink it, and nothing happened. Why won’t you let it go?”

Nothing happened.’

So an attempt to harm me didn’t count unless she succeeded.

Would they finally admit she wanted me dead once I was actually gone?

No. I had died in my previous life, and they had still covered for her.

I stopped arguing and lowered my head to finish dinner.

Once I fell silent, Mom’s tone softened. “After tomorrow, you’ll be part of the Hayes family. Spend some time with Lily tonight, and don’t upset her again.”

I looked up. “Didn’t the physician sedate her?”

The family physician cleared his throat.

“The medication only lasts a few hours. She could have another episode tonight, so try not to mention the wedding around her.”

“With so many people in the house, why would she come looking for me?” I asked deliberately.

Lily tightened her grip on her fork.

The doctor answered for her. “You’re her primary trigger.”

“So if she doesn’t see me, she won’t hurt anyone?”

“In theory, yes.”

I smiled without another word.

After dinner, I went back to my room and checked the lock.

A moment later, I heard faint footsteps outside.

Iyanked the door open. Lily stood in the hallway holding a paring knife.

She didn’t look startled. Instead, she slowly lifted the blade.

“What are you doing, Natalie?”

The point turned toward my heart. The tip of the knife was inches from my chest when Mom

called from the stairs.

“Lily!”

The knife slipped from Lily’s hand and clattered to the floor. She shrieked as if she had only just woken up.

“Why was I holding a knife?”

Mom rushed over and wrapped her arms around her. Ethan snatched up the knife, then glared

at me.

“What did you say to set her off this time?”
