I Sent Away Every Woman He Loved Until I Became the One Who Left Chapter 06

In the private lounge at The Meridian Club, Grant sat in the middle of the couch.

A half glass of whiskey in his hand.

A man with a buzz cut leaned in.

“Grant, why so quiet today? Your wife hasn’t called you a dozen times?”

Grant’s childhood friend Tyler Brooks laughed.

“Hey, I heard your wife asked you to meet at the courthouse today? She really going through with the divorce?”

“Just for show.” Buzz Cut snorted.

“Look at us. Which of us doesn’t only go home when our wife nags? Grant goes home every day. She’s still not satisfied?”

“Exactly,” someone across from him chimed in. “A guy with his money and looks, she should be counting her blessings. Divorce? Can she even leave him?”

The men talked over each other, the room getting louder.

Grant didn’t answer. He tipped his head back and drank.

He was ignoring her on purpose today.

If he responded, it meant softening. Softening meant admitting she had weight in this divorce.

He wasn’t going to take the bait.

The lounge door pushed open. Brittany leaned halfway in.

Her eyes were red. “Grant, my stomach feels off.”

Grant stood immediately. He set his glass on the coffee table and walked over, taking her arm. “What’s wrong?”

The men behind him hooted.

“Look at that. First time we’ve seen Grant this nervous.”

“That baby’s already doing work.”

“Healthy mom, healthy baby…”

Tyler nodded toward Grant, cigarette between his lips, and lowered his voice.

“You know your wife? Last year my girlfriend was waiting downstairs for me and ran into her. She grilled her for half an hour about where you were.”

“I said, ‘Lady, are you crazy?’ Turns out she really is sick.”

The others burst out laughing.

“Stop, stop. If she calls again, are we still playing cards?”

“Play. Of course we play.” Someone shuffled and stacked the deck. “I bet half an hour. She’ll call.”

“I bet an hour.”

“Two hours. Grant said when they go cold, her record is one day. Don’t set the time too short.”

Grant helped Brittany sit on the couch.

He glanced back at his phone on the coffee table.

The screen stayed dark.

He pulled a tissue and handed it to Brittany. “Play your cards.”

The game started.

Chips slid across the table.

Laughter and cursing mixed together.

Three hours passed. Half the players had left.

Tyler stretched and glanced at the coffee table.

“Wait. It’s been over three hours. Not one call from your wife?”

Someone said, “Maybe she’s blowing up his texts. Open it. Must be dozens.”

Grant didn’t answer. He reached over, picked up his phone, and tapped the screen.

The last read message was still the one she’d sent.

[I’m here. When are you coming?]

His brow furrowed slightly.

The others exchanged looks. “Really? Not a single message?”

The room went quiet for two seconds.

Someone’s phone rang. It was Grant’s driver, Owen Price.

He answered, listened for a moment, then walked over.

“Mr. Keller, it’s for you.”

Buzz Cut’s eyes lit up. “See? There it is.”

The others laughed too.

Someone tossed a card on the table. “Fine, I lost the hour bet. I’ll transfer you the money.”

Grant’s mouth curved, lazy and certain.

Legs crossed, he took the phone from his assistant.

But after one sentence, the smile vanished.

“What did you say?”
