She leaned closer and lowered her voice.

“He said those questions were just you messing with us outside women. That you’d never give the right answer.”

Then she raised her voice.

“So you two were just playing us like monkeys. Ridiculous.”

I sat there, my hands on my knees slowly tightening.

But my face kept its polite calm. “You didn’t think the money was ridiculous when you took the breakup payment.”

Chloe’s face stiffened. She didn’t argue.

I slung my bag over my shoulder and walked past her.

I pushed open the door. Outside, the sky had turned gray.

I sat on a bench by the road.

My fingers had been shaking since earlier.

The doctor said my dependency triggered physical reactions under stress. Hand tremors, heart palpitations, shortness of breath.

I gripped my bag strap, nails digging into my palm, forcing myself to count.

“One, two, three, four…”

My heart raced. My back started sweating.

My vision went dark for a moment.

I knew this was withdrawal.

I hugged my knees and buried my face in them.

My chest felt like someone was squeezing it.

I wanted to call him. If he just said one caring word, it would be okay.

The words “he doesn’t want me anymore” spun in my head until my scalp went numb.

Then I forced myself to correct it. “No. I don’t want him anymore.”

I pulled out my phone and dialed another number.

“Dr. Porter, it’s me.” My voice floated a little. “You said there’s a way to completely cure my dependency?”

She made a sound of agreement. “But that method is extreme. It might…”

“I want to try it.”
