I Sent Away Every Woman He Loved Until I Became the One Who Left Chapter 07

Grant froze with the phone in his hand.

The others were still laughing. “What’d she say? Begging you to come home?”

“Must be that dependency acting up again. She’s calling for backup.”

Grant slowly lowered the phone from his ear.

His fingers clenched tight. He turned to his assistant.

“Take Brittany home.”

Brittany, who’d been looking smug, blinked. “Grant? Where are you going? I want you to take

me.”

“You go first.”

He didn’t look at her. He grabbed his coat and walked out.

At the office, he went straight to the front desk.

“Did a file come in?”

The receptionist blinked, then quickly handed over a folder. “A Mr. Whitmore dropped this off earlier.”

He snatched it and opened it.

The words “Divorce Agreement” stared back at him. His hand stiffened.

“Impossible.”

His first thought was that it was forged.

Meredith, physically and mentally, would rather die than accept a divorce.

Then he turned two pages and saw her name written cleanly in the respondent’s line.

His pupils contracted.

The man on the phone earlier had said he was Meredith’s attorney.

He’d said, “Mr. Keller, I’ve delivered the divorce agreement to your front desk. Please sign for it.”

“Also, if we can’t reach a settlement, Ms. Winslow will proceed directly to litigation.”

“If it’s convenient in the next couple of days, could we meet in person?”

That was why he’d rushed back to the office.

He knew her condition was severe. Leaving him could trigger serious withdrawal.

Heart palpitations, tremors, difficulty breathing. Even self-harrn.

She couldn’t leave him.

During their last cold war, she’d gone out to stay one night and taker a cab back before dawn the next day.

This time wouldn’t be different. She was just forcing him to bend first.

Using retreat to advance. She’d learned that.

How long had it been since he’d seen her?

He suddenly remembered. He grabbed his car keys and headed out.

He drove straight back to Brookhaven House.

When he pushed the door open, the living room lights were on. The entryway night light was

on too.

He let out a small breath.

That was her habit.

He walked in and called out, “Merry, I’m home.”

No answer.

A figure was curled up on the couch, wrapped in his coat.

At the sound, she sat up slowly and rubbed her eyes. “Grant? You’re back?”

Grant froze. “Why are you here?”
