My Husband Wished for My Love, Then Got Bored in Year Seven Chapter 02

Thomas was on a call with Angela, his voice soft and endlessly patient. “The second swimsuit looks best on you. It’ll look stunning against your fair skin.”

His phone was on speaker. Angela laughed in response.

“I’m leaving my heels behind. The shore there is rocky, and I don’t want to twist an ankle.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll be there to take care of you.”

I stepped out of the bedroom with my suitcase in hand.

Thomas sat at the dining table, unaware I was there, and sighed quietly.

“I only feel truly relaxed when I’m talking to you, spending time with you. These seven years have worn me out completely.”

A sharp, bitter laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it.

He was cheating, plain and simple. No excuse could change that.

He turned around at the sound, and the warm smile vanished from his face.

“What are you doing home?”

His gaze dropped to my suitcase, and he froze for a moment.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

I ignored him and hurried toward the front door with my luggage.

There were only two hours left until Joseph’s flight departed.

Thomas shot to his feet, grabbing my wrist.

He noticed I was still wearing my hospital gown, and a flicker of guilt crossed his features.

“I’ve been swamped these past few days and didn’t bring you fresh clothes. That was my mistake.”

“I’ll drive you back to the hospital right now. Tell me whatever you feel like eating, and I’ll make it for you.”

I pulled my arm away from him roughly. “Don’t bother.”

He gave my suitcase an abrupt tug. The latch popped open, and all my clothes spilled across the floor.

Beneath everything lay a glossy travel brochure advertising the exact resort he planned to visit with Angela.

“I thought you were going back to the hospital?” Thomas raised his voice, defensive and agitated.

“Lucille, I can’t bring you along on this business trip. Can’t you stop being so stubborn?”

“I’m traveling for work, not for a vacation. Are you determined to cause another scene and embarrass me at the office again?”

“Do you want to pick another fight? Have you forgotten why you jumped off that balcony?”

He was trying to shut me up, to keep me in line—or he’d end our marriage for good.

Calm me down, silence me—or he would end our marriage for good.

“I already signed the paper—”

A deafening crash from the phone cut my words short.

Thomas immediately switched the call from speaker to his ear. He shot me a wary, guarded glance, terrified I would spiral out of control again.

“There’s an emergency at work. I don’t have the energy to argue with you right now.”

He threw me a curt explanation before turning back to the phone. “I’m on my way over this minute!”

What an act.

I felt nauseous. I had no time to clean up the mess on the floor, so I grabbed my driver’s license and phone and sprinted for the door.

Thomas was in even more of a hurry. As he passed me, he seized my arm and dragged me toward his car.

“I’ll drop you back at the hospital on the way.”

I stumbled alongside him. The wound on my broken arm throbbed so badly my vision blurred.

“Thomas, you’re insane! Go wherever you need to go, but leave me out of it!”

He paid no attention to anything I said, slamming on the gas. His mind was fixed entirely on his so-called coworker on the phone.

“Whatever it is, don’t touch it. Wait for me to get there and sort it out. I’m coming right away.”

I grabbed the heavy bottle from the cup holder and hurled it at his head. Blood streamed down his face, yet he never spared me a single glance.

“Thomas!”

“Enough!” He snapped. “Can’t I handle a work crisis without you losing it? We only talk. It’s not like we’re sleeping together or anything, you—”

His sentence died mid-breath. He drew in a deep breath and squeezed his eyes shut, utterly exhausted. “Never mind.”

“Go ahead and throw your tantrum. In your head, everything I do counts as betrayal or cheating no matter what. Think whatever you like. If hurting me will finally calm you down, keep going. I’m used to it by now.”

Dizziness washed over me until I could barely form a word.

Thomas and I had been married for years. He knew I suffered from severe vertigo.

He knew, he just didn’t care.

I clung tightly to my seatbelt as tears blurred my vision.

Joseph had never once let me endure this kind of humiliation. He never drove recklessly; he always made sure I felt safe.

No matter how urgent something was, I always came first.

All because of one selfish wish from Thomas, I had been torn away from my childhood sweetheart of twenty-three years for seven long years.

I had missed him every day, only to suffer endless coldness and contempt here.

My phone vibrated inside my bag. My heart lurched when I saw Joseph’s name light up the screen.

Before I could answer, Thomas reached over and ended the call.
