He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 11

I did not reply.

Late that same night, he lay in wait outside my apartment building.

I got home late from work. He was huddled in the shadows by the stairwell landing, looking like a stray dog chased out of its home.

When he spotted me, he stood up.

“Elowen, are you working behind the scenes to ruin me?”

He punched the doorframe hard. The whole door rattled.

I said nothing. I walked inside and locked my door.

He banged and shouted outside for ten full minutes.

A neighbor opened their door and yelled at him to stop acting crazy

Building security arrived and escorted him away.

Sitting on my bed, I texted Liana.

[Darien is harassing my residence late at night. Can I file for a Protection Order?]

Liana replied quickly.

[Yes. We need evidence. Do you have building-entrance cameras?]

[The whole complex has full-coverage surveillance.]

[Perfect. I’ll pull footage tomorrow.]

The next morning at work, the building security guard stopped me.

“Ms. Voss. A man in a loud floral-print shirt with a thick gold chain came asking for your address today. Looked like a debt collector.”

I paused.

“Did he leave?”

“I chased him off. Be careful coming home after dark.”

I thanked him.

First thing at the office, I updated Liana on what had happened

That afternoon she submitted the Protection Order application to the court.

The filing laid out clear facts-Darien, a debtor with unresolved property disputes against his ex-wife-had repeatedly harassed her in volatile outbursts, and his creditors had traced her address, posing a genuine risk to her safety.

The court accepted the case.

The following morning, Darien was summoned to court for a hearing.

He saw me outside the courthouse. It was as if I had stabbed him.

“Are you so desperate to cut every tie with me? I’m still your husband!”

I corrected him.

“Ex-husband.”

“The only connection remaining between us is child-support payments.”

He opened his mouth ready to shout more.

I turned and walked away.

A court bailiff called out his name.

“Darien Hale. It’s your turn.”

I never looked back.

My phone buzzed. It was an automated hospital payment reminder.

I opened my banking app and transferred the hospital deposit.

Memo: Kai Hale hospital fees.

I saved the transaction receipt.

That evening, one of Darien’s aunts called my phone.

“Elowen, Darien’s father really is in the hospital. You ought to go visit. The older man did nothing wrong.”

I said “I see”, told her I would not go, and hung up.

News of Lorelei and her husband’s interrogation results spread quickly.

All the money they had stolen through years of guaranty fraud had been cycled through offshore money-laundering networks. Most funds had been sent to associates in Southeast

Asia.

Authorities seized their bank accounts, but less than eight-thousand dollars remained.

Once Darien learned that fact, he sat out on the curb outside the county detention facility all

night.

Detention-center staff ordered him to leave twice. He refused to move. He sat there on the curb

like a dog with its spine broken.

Early next morning, his parents rushed to the scene.

His mother had barely stepped out of their car when she caught sight of her haggard son sitting on the pavement. Her blood pressure spiked, and she was rushed straight to the

emergency room.

I went to the hospital to visit Kai.

Darien was there too.

His beard was unkempt. His eye sockets were sunken. He looked hollowed-out, skin hanging

loose on his frame.

When he saw me, he jumped to his feet. Hope flared in his eyes, like I was his last shot at

survival.

“Elowen. We can’t get any of Lorelei’s stolen money back.”
