He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 01

Lorelei Veyra, the widow of my husband Darien Hale’s late best friend, showed up on our doorstep.

She begged him to sign a personal guaranty for 50000, claiming her child was critically ill.

In my past life, I’d known the real secured amount was 2000000. I’d locked everyone inside the house to stop him.

Unable to raise the funds, the widow fell into a desperate crisis with her child.

Darien and our eight-year-old son Kai had not spoken a single word to me ever after that day.

Ten years slipped by. Darien built a prosperous business. He wore watches worth a large sum, and spent a hefty amount on a single dinner.

Yet he ignored my ongoing health struggles, unwilling to set aside any funds to support my care.

He said I deserved every bit of suffering. That I ought to live forever drowning in guilt over the widow and her little girl.

When Kai got accepted into an Ivy League school, he never came home again.

On my birthday, all I received was an envelope holding his official withdrawal paperwork.

“Do you think you won?” his letter read. “I deliberately got into an Ivy just to drop out. I’m going to waste every single bit of effort you poured into raising me.”

“I’m heading to Africa to do humanitarian field work. I will never set foot in this country again. This is my punishment for your refusal to help them back then.”

I faded away, ending up alone in a small rental unit.

Darien buried my body right beside the widow’s grave. He said even in death, I needed to keep atoning for them.

A single tear fell from his eyes above her headstone.

“I’ve got all the funds I ever wanted now. But you’re gone.”

I opened my eyes again. I was right back to the day the widow first knocked on our door.

Darien jumped to his feet.

“I’ll sign the guaranty. Let’s go right now,” he said.

A strange calm washed over me. The first thing I did was call my attorney.

“You can sign that guaranty, but we’re getting a divorce first.”

No one paid the slightest attention to my words.

Darien grabbed his car keys off the coffee table.

“Lorelei, let’s go. That child’s health comes before everything else.”

Kai stepped directly in front of Lorelei Veyra, his eyes sharp and defensive as he stared straight at me.

“Mom, don’t come any closer.”

I ignored every person in the room.

I dialed my attorney, Liana Mercer.

“Liana, I want a divorce. Draft the Marital Settlement Agreement immediately. I’ll send you all asset breakdowns in twenty minutes.”

Next, I phoned my mother.

“Mom, I’m getting divorced. Come pick me up. Right now.”

I ended the call and lifted my gaze.

“I won’t stop you from signing for her. But we get divorced first.”

Silence fell across the whole room.

Darien’s features darkened.

“Elowen Voss, are you weaponizing divorce against me?”

I pulled out my camera and adjusted it to find a good recording angle.

Tears streamed down Lorelei’s face.

“Darien, I don’t want you to sign anything anymore. I’ll just leave…”

She turned, sobbing. Darien snatched her wrist hard.

Her delicate frame trembled, like an autumn leaf caught in the wind.

“I don’t want to be the reason your family falls apart.”

Darien stood ramrod-straight, like a flag planted on the moral high ground.

“Elowen, you know full well Lorelei’s husband and I were brothers. We would’ve died for each other.”

“He’s gone now. It falls on me to look after his wife and child.”

His voice dropped, heavy and final.

“I am signing that guaranty today. And nothing is going to stop me.”

Kai gritted his teeth. For the very first time, he grabbed my hand and tried to coax me.

“Mom, please just say yes. I promise I’ll never misbehave again. I’ll get perfect grades in every class!”

I stared down at him without saying a word.

All those sleepless nights, every sacrifice I’d made for his education. All of it had turned into a weapon he wielded against me for a stranger’s sake.

Kai thought he was breaking through my resolve. He rushed to keep pleading.

“If you’ll just be kind to Aunt Lorelei, I’ll stop being picky about food. I’ll stay off my phone late at night. I’ll obey you in everything.”

Darien looked toward me, his tone softening.

“Once Lorelei’s crisis is behind us, we can have another baby. We can give you the big family you’ve always wanted.”

“Now get all our savings together, and come with me to the bank—”

I burst out laughing.
