He Asked for a Divorce, Then Begged Me to Marry Him Again After I Moved On Chapter 14

A sharp, throbbing pain pierced my brain like a needle.

I slowly opened my eyes.

The sterile smell of disinfectant filled my nose. As my mind cleared, I realized I was lying in a

hospital room.

Ethan had stayed by my bedside all night.

“You’re awake?”

His voice was rasping from staying up till dawn.

“Does the wound hurt?” He helped me sit up gently.

I shook my head. “It’s manageable.”

Checking my phone for the date, I asked, “Don’t you have an important afternoon meeting today?”

“You don’t need to stay here. Go back to the office.”

He didn’t answer directly, pouring a glass of warm water and placing it into my hands.

“Claire,” he said, his expression far more serious than usual.

I gave a brief response without raising my head.

I clicked on a voice message from my mother.

“I rejected Serena’s request last night.”

“Sweetheart, don’t forget! You promised me you’d go on that blind date in three days! I checked his background personally this time, he’s truly high quality!”

Both sounds overlapped in the quiet room.

I replied to my mother first. “…Got it, Mom.”

Then I looked up at Ethan. “What were you saying?”

My mother’s voice message had covered his words.

His eyes fell upon my phone screen.

After a long pause, he asked quietly, “You agreed to go on a blind date?”

“Yes,” I answered, puzzled. “If his qualifications are good, why wouldn’t I meet him?”

Ethan’s expression didn’t change.

“Let me ask you something.”

“Why did you say you didn’t want me and Serena together?”

I spoke without thinking. “Because when you’re involved with Serena, your work productivity drops.”

Realizing something, I looked at him incredulously.

“You didn’t think I still had feelings for you, did you?”

I had made my boundaries crystal clear over these past few months.

Ethan let out a faint, self-deprecating laugh.

“I did,” he admitted plainly.

His voice dropped lower, his smile vanishing entirely.

“Glad to know I was mistaken.”

I stated each word clearly.

“Ethan, you can rest completely assured.”

“I stopped having any feelings for you long ago.”

“You were right. We are not suitable.”

“If we weren’t forced to run a company together, I would much prefer being complete strangers.”

The hospital room fell dead silent, the dripping sound of the IV line amplified in the quiet space.

He lowered his head, his thoughts completely unreadable.

After a long while, my phone buzzed with a reply from my mother.

As I looked down at my phone, his flat, almost emotionless voice sounded above me.

“Get some rest.”

“I’m heading back to the office for the meeting.”
